GREENVILLE, NC – Adrienne Marilyn Dunning, 43, formerly of Aulander, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 5, 2021 at the Vidant Medical Center of Greenville, NC.

Adrienne was born on January 16, 1978 to Ronald and Marilyn Vick Dunning in Hertford County, NC. She was a member of Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church and attended Greenville First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Greenville where she lived. She was a 1996 graduate of Bertie High School. She later graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature, and recently received a Masters of Arts degree from ECU. Adrienne worked as the Business Services Coordinator for the College of Education in the Dean’s Office. She was an avid ECU Pirate fan. Adrienne lit up a room with her infectious smile and contagious laughter. She had a giving heart and a joyful spirit for making others happy. She enjoyed traveling, getting together with family and friends, cooking, and golfing. Her greatest joy and passion in life was writing and being an author. Adrienne was loved by many and showed her love for others in all that she did. She will be deeply missed by all but will forever carry on in the hearts of everyone she touched throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, The Rev. Wiley Daniel Vick, paternal grandfather, Grover Dunning, paternal grandmother, Goldie Dunning, uncles; Bill Dunning, Lawrence Dunning, Carl Dunning, James Dunning, Samuel Vick, and Phillip Vick, and aunts; Becky DeCoste, Ercel Pierce, and Nancy Acree.

Left to cherish Adrienne’s memory is her parents, Ronald and Marilyn Dunning, her sister, Angela Dunning Boyd and husband Jonathan of Greenville; maternal grandmother, Lillie Parker Vick of Falkland; three maternal aunts, Annette Mayo and husband Charles of Falkland, Janie Dail and husband Andy of Tarboro, and Michelle Vick of Jamesville; paternal uncle, Richard Dunning and wife Dianna of Middleton, ID; along with many beloved cousins.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 10, 2021, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC and other times at the home of Adrienne’s parents in Aulander

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at 4:00 pm at the Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, with The Rev. Michael Bartlette and the Rev. Taylor Latham officiating. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery, Aulander, NC.

I am shocked and saddened by this news. Adrienne was a delightful student in two of my English classes, Golden Age Children’s Literature in Fall 2020 and Victorian Literature in Spring 2021. Her persistence in pursuing her MA across time, while working for the Dean’s Office, and her encouraging attitude and thoughtful remarks about the literature were a delight to me. She offered particularly insightful comments about Victorian Literature from her perspective as a writer.

I’ll be praying for you–her parents, sister and brother-in-law, grandmother, and aunts and uncle–this week especially, but also as you come to mind in the next few months. I know this strong woman of faith and compassion will be greatly missed.

Words seem so inadequate at this time of loss for each of you. Adrienne was a special person and touched so many lives through her journey of life. She enjoyed life to the fullest and greeted everyone with a smile. Her office was located next to mine until recently and we shared a friendship for many years. She will be sorely missed and I treasure the times we shared and her wonderful books (one of which she just gave me for my birthday in June). She was a dear friend and I know she is among angels in her heavenly home. Cherish the memories as they get sweeter each day and may God comfort you and family members with strength and peace during this time of loss.

I pray as her family sails this sea of grief they will find an island of comfort upon which they can reminisce, remember and be refreshed with the memories they made together as family. She left to you a piece of her heart, it is called memories
