WOODLAND, NC – Aileen Autrey Brown Jenkins, age 89, of Joe Brown Road, passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022, at her home. She was born December 14, 1932, to the late Joseph Pritchard Brown, Sr. and Aileen Autrey Brown in Northampton County. She graduated from Westtown School, Westtown Pennsylvania in 1951 and returned to North Carolina to further her education at Women’s College (now UNC-Greensboro) graduating in 1955 with a degree in Home Economics. She married her childhood sweetheart, Joseph Dwight (Billy) Jenkins, Sr. on June 23, 1956. She was a devoted, loving wife for 52 years. She pursued her passion for teaching returning to her roots in Woodland where she taught vocational home economics at Woodland – Olney High School from 1955 to 1959. Her teaching continued as she went on to enjoy a longstanding career as a Home Economics Extension Agent with North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service in Northampton County until retiring in 1993. She had many roles as an extension agent, working with 4-H, helping low-income families with food and nutrition along with other needs, assisting families with remodeling plans and working with Extension Homemakers clubs (formerly known as Home Demonstration Clubs).

Autrey loved her family, church, friends, sports, horses and community immensely. She served in so many roles during her lifetime. She was an active member of Woodland Baptist Church serving as a deacon and on various committees. She was also active throughout the years with Cedar Grove Friends Meeting of Woodland, the church in which she grew up. Autrey was a member of the Civic Club, later the Ladies Auxiliary. She served on the Pine Forest Rest Home Advisory Board. She also served Northeast Academy as a member of both the PTO and the Board of Directors. She, along with her husband, Billy, hosted the Woodland Horse Show for over 30 years. She was recognized in Northampton County for her work in education, extension and as a community and church leader. She was devoted and dedicated in her faith, believed strongly in the power of prayer and loved the Lord with all of heart.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Dwight “Billy” Jenkins, Sr., an infant daughter, Rebecca Aileen Jenkins; and her brother, Joseph Pritchard “Joe” Brown, Jr.

Left to cherish Autrey’s memory is her daughter, Aileen Jenkins Staples and children, Caroline, Alison, and Jay of Wake Forest; her son, Joseph Dwight Jenkins, Jr. and wife Catherine and children, Josie Lee and Lilly of Kernersville; four sisters-in-law, Bert Brown of Woodland, Marjorie Younts and husband Tommy of High Point; Monti Jenkins of Pendleton; and Mary Lois Nooney of Roanoke Rapids, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who she loved dearly. Among those she loved dearly, her four-legged companion, Bubbles, who rarely left her side.

The family wishes to express its deepest gratitude and appreciation to Patricia Brown Canady, who was Autrey’s caregiver for the last several years. Her patience, kindness, care and attentiveness enabled Autrey to fulfill her wish of living out her days at home.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at 2:00 pm at the Woodland Baptist Church, Woodland, NC, with the Rev. Dr. J Brabban officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior, from 1:00 pm until 1:45 pm at the church. Burial will follow the service in the Quaker Section of the Woodland Cemetery in Woodland, NC.

Dear Aileen & Dwight- I was saddened to read of your mama’s passing & want you both to know I am thinking of you. If doesn’t matter the age or health, losing ones parents is a hard passage of life. I’ve known your mom & dad literally my entire life & all the memories are special. I think I was 8 yrs. old the 1st time I went to the Woodland Horse Show. I feel so lucky, & I’m sure you do also, to have grown up in the small town environment & 1 day shows in eastern NC during that era. People like your parents led by example, yet I don’t think anyone enjoyed the life, people & horses more than them. Keep your mom & your memories close to your heart.

Audrey was an exception Home Economics/ Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, so creative, caring and competent in everything she did. As an FCS Specialist ata NC State, I had the great privilege of working with her for many years. She was one of my favorite people! She had a great sense of humor and loved what she did and was really sharp and really loved helping people. I am so sorry to hear this! My thought and prayers are with you both. She was a special lady! I am sad to know that she is gone, but am sure God has a plan for her in heaven!!
