LEWISTON, NC – Alice Ramona Jernigan Saunders Bazemore, age 91, of Piney Woods Road, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2020 at the Vidant Bertie Hospital of Windsor, NC.

Mrs. Bazemore was born on January 17, 1929 to Joseph Hubert Jernigan and Fannie Burkett Jernigan in Bertie County, NC. Ramona had been a devoted member of Lewiston First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. She spent many years working at Humphrey’s Drug Store which is where most knew her from. She was known as a sweet, kind lady that always saw the good in everyone. She was an encourager that was always positive in conversation. When Ramona married Robert, she became a homemaker and enjoyed flowers, gardening, and the time she and Robert spent in Florida. Ramona was loved by many and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Besides her parents, Ramona was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, J.P. Saunders, Jr., second husband, Robert W. Bazemore, her son, Jimmy Saunders, and a sister, Lacelle Parker.

Left to cherish Ramona’s memory is her daughter, Alice Pittman and husband Bill of Windsor, NC, two grandsons, Dr. Tres Pittman and wife Betsy of Raleigh, and Jamieson Pittman of Windsor; great-grandchildren, Allison and Aidan Pittman of Raleigh; God grandson, Patrick Demofonta of Windsor; two sisters, Evelyn Parker of Raleigh, and Doyle Long of Raleigh; brother, Joseph Hubert Jernigan, Jr. and wife Priscilla of Graceville, FL; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2020, at 4:00 pm at the Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Al Hughson officiating. Burial will follow in Hoggard Memorial Cemetery, Lewiston, NC where the family will visit with friends at the conclusion of the committal service.

Truly sorry about the passing of cousin Ramona. She always shared a kind smile just like so many from the Jernigan tree. Recently saw Alice and Bill while visiting dad in rest home in Windsor and enjoyed visiting then. Again, my prayers are with the direct family members.

Alice and family, I can truly say earths loss is heavens gain. So many sweet memories of working at the “The Goodie Shope” on Saturdays with “Miss Ramona” as we teenage girls called her. What a gem she was. I’ve never seen her without that sweet smile. Love and prayers to the family.
