Annie Lee Armstrong Matthews, of Enfield, passed away in her home on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

Annie Lee was born to the late W.C. and Martha Armstrong on October 29, 1925.  She lived on a farm outside of Rocky Mount, until she moved to Enfield with her family as a young girl.  Annie Lee met her future husband, Leonard, in high school and they married upon his return from service in World War II.  She was a bookkeeper at the Plantation Restaurant and Motel and became a homemaker once she started a family, staying home to raise her children.  Annie Lee was a faithful member of Enfield Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class.  She had her favorite pew and could be found there every Sunday.

In addition to her parents, Annie Lee was preceded in death by her sisters, Louvenia A. Lockamy and Rebecca A. Parker; and her brothers, W. Ishmael Armstrong, W. Frank Armstrong, W.V. “Tommy” Armstrong, and Harvey L. Armstrong.

She is survived by her sons, Matt Matthews and wife Angela of Wake Forest and Michael Matthews and wife Barbara of Rocky Mount; her daughter, Sallie Griffin and husband Greg of Enfield; and five grandchildren, Courtland, Kate and husband David, Wesley, Colin, and Mollie.

Special thanks are offered to Sean Eppes, PA and the staff at Eastern NC Medical Group for their wonderful care.  Special thanks also to the loving Christian caretakers, Willie Mae Kilpatrick, Anna Byrd, Kindell and Delois Epps, and Margie Justice, who watched over Annie Lee during her illness.

The family will gather for a celebration of life graveside service on Friday, March 20, 2020 at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield.  Friends will be invited to attend a celebration of life at Enfield Baptist Church at a later date to be announced.

Memorial contributions may be made directly to Enfield Baptist Church, 200 West Burnette Avenue, Enfield, NC 27823 or online by clicking here.
