Benjamin Oscar Joyner, Jr., age 87, of Scotland Neck, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2022 peacefully at his residence in Scotland Neck.

Ben was born on October 27, 1935 to Benjamin and Mary Ruth Joyner in Scotland Neck.  He was a graduate of Scotland Neck High School where he enjoyed playing football. Ben worked in the textile industry for most of his career until his retirement at 84 years of age. Ben enjoyed golfing and hunting with his sons and friends and was a dedicated Tarheel and Redskins fan. He loved working out and staying in shape over his lifetime. He was a wonderful provider for his family and considered a “Superman” by his children. He never met a stranger and lived by the motto “Don’t Worry – Be Happy”! Ben and Elizabeth loved riding down to the Roanoke River to observe the wildlife and nature.

Ben was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ruth Bulluck Staton Joyner; his father, Benjamin Oscar Joyner, Sr., and his sisters, Doris Staton Harris and Frances Joyner Batton.

Ben is survived by his wife Elizabeth of the home; his sons, Richard Alan Joyner and his wife Diane of Swansboro and Russell Joyner and wife Terri of Wilmington; his daughters, Rebecca Joyner Vanderhaar and her husband Frank of Wilmington, Ruth Joyner Floyd and her husband Michael of Wilmington, Debra Roberson and her husband Keith of Tarboro, and Jackie Bunting and her husband Gene of Oak City; his grandchildren, Eric Joyner, Dustin Whitehurst and his wife Kimberly, Mallory Joyner, Skylar Vanderhaar, Colyn Vanderhaar, Cameron Vanderhaar, Imani Vanderhaar, Courtney Weaver and her husband Nick, Jade Floyd, Daniel Bunting, and Alex Bunting; and his great grandchildren, Andrew Staton, Mason Weaver, and Everest Whitehurst.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 2, 2023 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service – Letchworth Chapel in Scotland Neck.  A celebration of life memorial service will follow the visitation in the Chapel.

The family asks for no visitors at the home and that all contact with visitors be at the funeral home.

Elizabeth, I am so sorry to hear about Ben. He was such a good guy. I was in Pittsburgh for Christmas while all this was happening, and I am truly sorry I missed his funeral. I hope to see you soon. Call me at 826-5948. Love, Donna.

I only knew Ben Joyner for a few short years but I’ll tell you, he had to have been one the nicest men I had ever met in my life. I know Elizabeth must know that she was lucky lucky to have a had him. Elizabeth we’re praying for you too. Love Ihall & Susan
