Bertha Mae Coleman “Bert” Edwards, 85, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at Our Community Hospital in Scotland Neck.
Bert was born on August 21, 1931 in Littleton, NC to the late Irving Alexander Coleman, Sr. and Susie Gardner Coleman. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend to many. Her life centered around her family and her greatest joy came from taking care of them. Bert worked for years alongside her husband, Sam, at Edwards Cotton Company, where she was usually working in the office or riding in the cotton module truck. She loved traveling with Sam and especially enjoyed their lake house. A true treasure, Bert will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Kitchin Edwards; her daughter, Amie Coleman Edwards; her sister, Lucy Rose Coleman Weeks; and her brothers, Irving A. Coleman, Jr., George Lee Coleman, and Thomas Coleman.
Bert is survived by her daughters, Debbie Duke and husband Keith of Scotland Neck, Libby Edwards of Scotland Neck, and Burton Edwards of Roxboro; her son, Sammy Edwards of Scotland Neck; her sister, Nancy Dickens of Scotland Neck; her half sister, Jean Alexander of Morehead City; six grandchildren, Sam Edwards, III, Rebecca Boyd and husband Craig, Jon Edwards, Kristin Duke, Haley Williams, and Evan Williams; two great-grandchildren, Alexis Boyd and Kaitlyn Boyd; beloved family friend, Robbie Waters of Scotland Neck; and many special nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Bert’s caregivers, Catherine Lawrence and Josephine Smith, along with the staff at Our Community Hospital for their love and care.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck. Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery. The Reverend Doctor Allen Cherry will be presiding.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 pm on Friday, August 11, 2017 at Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
