Brenda Lassiter Newbern, 73 of Colerain, NC was called to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, surrounded by her family, following a long, courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

Her family is eternally grateful for the years of love, laughter, and memories made especially with her four precious grandchildren who were the light of her life and called her Maw Maw.

Brenda was born July 13, 1950, in Ahoskie, NC to the late Raymond and Ruth Lassiter. She graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1968 where she was a spirited cheerleader for four years. Brenda was vital in several choral groups in high school and was selected as “Miss Congeniality” in the 1968 Miss Ahoskie Pageant. She retired from Georgia-Pacific Corporation in 2008 after 26 years of service.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 52 years, Caroll V. Newbern Sr. of Colerain, NC, her two sons Caroll Newbern Jr. and wife Suzanne of Colerain, NC and Travis Newbern and wife Catherine of Greenville, NC; four grandchildren, Coleton and Tanner Newbern of Greenville; Perry and Sarah Newbern of Colerain. Brenda is also survived by her favorite sister Gloria Nicholson, aunt Diane Futrell (Robert), aunt Frances “Tudy” Lassiter, aunt Gwen Lassiter, uncle Henry Perry (Helen), uncle Joe Lassiter (Ellen), numerous nieces and nephews and “adopted daughter” Teresa Barker.

Brenda’s love for music began at a young age, singing in a family gospel quartet. She was a faithful member of Early’s Baptist Church in Ahoskie where she sang in the church choir from childhood, until her health declined. She found great joy in cooking for her family and friends and doing many forms of crafting, including making wreaths to give to others. Brenda loved being outdoors, growing beautiful flowers and vegetables in the garden. She found great joy driving friends and grandchildren in the buggy down the dirt paths of the family farm while bouncing through mud holes. She adored spending time at their beach house in Kill Devil Hill, NC and she loved to shop.

Brenda was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. There will be a little less light without her smile, laughter, music and beautiful blue eyes.

The family is deeply grateful to Diane Bazemore and Denine Council for the love and care they provided, which allowed Brenda the best possible quality of life during her last years.

Flowers are welcome and memorial donations may be made to Early’s Baptist Church, 310 S Early Station Rd, Ahoskie, NC 27910 or online by clicking here

A visitation will be held Thursday, September 7th at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC from 6:00-7:30 pm.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, September 8th at 11:00 am at Garrett- Sykes Funeral Service in Ahoskie NC, with the Rev. Dr. Jesse Croom officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, NC.

From first grade when I first meet Gloria, I’ve felt a part of the Lassiter family. Spending the night and riding the bus was a big deal to me. Saturday Brenda would roll, tease, and fix our hair to go to Ahoskie and get Mrs. Ruth when she got off of work at Roses. Getting a dollar and getting a new 45 record, going to the movies for 50 cent setting through it 2 times, going to TasteeFreeze before football games- cheeseburgers fries and shakes, blankets and hot chocolate while we watched Brenda cheer. Playing Rook, grilled cheese fudge cookies making potato soup, going to Early’s Baptist Church and listen to Raymond, Ruth, and Brenda sing. Brenda helping me with my cheerleading. My heart is full and so are my eyes. I love you all dearly and can’t wait til we meet again In the Sweet By and By. I love my Brenda and Gloria Sisters.
