AHOSKIE, NC – Cathy Smith Stroud Piland, age 61, passed away on August 14, 2021, at her home, with her family by her side.

Mrs. Piland was born in Ahoskie, NC, on March 6, 1960, a daughter of the late Cecil Earl and Wilma Minton Smith Stell. Cathy was a graduate of Ahoskie High School, and earned two master’s degree from East Carolina University, one in Early Childhood Education and one in Library Science. Cathy taught elementary school for a while and then took the position of Librarian/Media Center Coordinator at Bearfield Primary School. She touched the lives of many young children, many of whom she looked to as her own. Cathy was a woman of many talents, especially when it came to sewing, quilting and embroidery. She loved teaching others her craft through instruction classes in Virginia. Cathy was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her husband, Bill, at their home on the Albemarle Sound and her grand babies. Cathy also had a soft spot in her heart for her grand puppies and grand kitty.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Timmy Stroud.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, Bill Piland; two daughters, Leanne (Hugh) Stroud of Scotland Neck, NC, and Stephanie Piland of Austin, TX; four sons, Chris (Sarah) Stroud of Ahoskie, NC, Zach (Candace) Stroud of Concord, NC, Jeremy Piland of Shelbyville, KY, and Nicholas Piland of Ocracoke, NC; five grandchildren, Alyssa Roussis, Dawson Stroud and Mackenzie Copeland of Scotland Neck, NC, and Austin Stroud and Kaylee Stroud of Ahoskie, NC; two sisters, Janet (Dave) True of Micro, NC, and Samantha (Kevin) Dunlow of Seal Beach, CA.

The family would like to send out a special thank you to Winton Baptist Church for installing the ramp  for Cathy at her home, and to Vidant Home Health and Hospice for the excellent, compassionate care given to her.

The family will receive friends on Monday, August 16, 2021, from 6:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, and other times at the home.

A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 2:00 pm at the Carpenter’s Shop Church, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Dr. Wallace Phillips, and Rev. Randy Miller officiating. A private burial will be in the Brinkley Family Cemetery.

“The service was so wonderful, the beautiful Testimony of a GODLY Lady. Cathy preached her own Homegoing Service, by the Life of Service she lived. I will miss her tremendously. My Family sends prayers of PEACE and COMFORT in this time of missing her physical present. We know we’ll undoubtedly we’ll see Cathy soon. BLESSED HOPE, Cathy knew she’d be experiencing it soon. We still KNOW, by HIS WORD, The Long Eternity together is going to come by passing or rapture. Praise GOD for Cathy’s HEALING!
Much LOVE,
Teresa “Reesie” Turner and Dallesport, and Ann Wighins”

Cathy was so much to my family. She was my 25 yr old sons teacher and my 20 yr olds librarian. She and Bill both were on worship team with us at carpenter shop. We spent social time with them. She made my daughter a blanket when she was born amd we had been in Charleston several years at this point. Her love for bill and her kids and grandbabies and God were her biggest accomplishments. Bill, kids, grandkids, we are so sorry for your loss and she will be dearly missed. Please let us know if we can help in any way. With so much love. Sheila

I had the pleasure of working with Cathy at Bearfield Primary School until my retirement. She was one of the sweetest and smartest people I know. There was not a question about a book or anything in her Media Center that she couldn’t answer. I taught Austin in first grade and she was always there to lend a helping hand. She will truly be missed. We love you Mrs. Poland. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

I am so sorry to hear about Cathy. There are so many fun memories.I will always remember our friendship. We had babies within days of each other. She was due before me and I went first. She had a few choice words for me.. “ not bad ones” And she was coming in my room within a few hours….. Her and I had a lot of fun times……We were busy raising our families and working and didn’t visit as much as we had but we always knew the bond between us. I will miss seeing her and always knowing she was there….. Love to you LeAnne,Chris,& Zack

As a teenager many years ago, my first job was as a cashier at Roses Dept Store where I worked with Cathy. I remember being such a sweet person and always smiling. Prayers for her family during this sad and difficult time.
