Charles Robert “Bob” Shields

Charles Robert “Bob” Shields, 82, went to be with the Lord on November 7, 2010 surrounded by his family.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Boone, with the Reverend Allan K. Blume presiding. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the Baptist Cemetery in Scotland Neck.

Bob was born in Hobgood on June 2, 1928. Raised in Scotland Neck, he graduated from N.C. State University with a degree in Architectural Engineering. After college, he was hired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the design team of Kerr Dam. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict and was honorable discharged from the Air Force Reserves as a Captain. He was a partner in Shield-Wyatt Architects in Rocky Mount and while in Rocky Mount was active at the First Baptist Church, serving as Deacon, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School teacher, and President of the Baptist Men. In the Rocky Mount community he was a Rotarian, served a year as the President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of the Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce, Member of the Eastern Section of the N.C. Society of Architects, serving as president, and President of the N.C. State Baptist Convention for one year. Bob and his wife, Burton, co-owned The Store House, a mini-storage facility in Rocky Mount. The people of the little nation of Moldova were a passion of his for over twenty years. He visited the country many times leading teams of Christians from several different churches. They worked with Moldovan churches, orphanages, and villages, providing humanitarian materials and sharing the Gospel as they worked among the people of Moldova.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cecil Shields of Scotland Neck; his brother, John Shields of Asheboro; his sister, Betty Lou Shields of Asheboro; and his grandson, Jordan Shields Morris of Rocky Mount.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Sarah Burton Clark of Scotland Neck; daughter, Millie Shields Morris and husband John Robert Morris of Red Oak; sons, Robert Burton Shields and wife Melinda Gale Shields of Kansas City, KS and Bradford Leon Shields, Sr. and wife Kimberly Flora Shields of Boone; and seven grandchildren, Burton Edward Morris of Durham, Bradford Leon Shields, Jr. and Sarah Joyner Shields both of Raleigh, Meredith Joy Shields of Boone, and Jessica Gale Shields, Amy Elizabeth Shields, and Robert Harrington Shields all of Kansas City, KS.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Moldova Fund at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 3505 Bamboo Road, Boone, NC 28607 or to Medi-Home Hospice, P.O. Box 1357, Newland, NC 28657.

Arrangements are being handled by Hampton Funeral Home in Boone and Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
