DAYTON,OH- David Allen Smith MSG (U.S. Army, Ret), age 75, of Dayton, passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020. David was born on February 4, 1945, to the late Henry and Elizabeth Frobes Smith in Newport News, VA.
He attended Virginia Tech and later received his Bachelor’s Degree. As one of the last of the cold war warriors, David dedicated his life to the United States by serving in Vietnam, Germany, and Stateside.
After 25 years of loyal service in U.S. Army Intelligence, David retired to the Tidewater area. He enjoyed helping people so a second career at Lowe’s and Dale’s hardware stores was right up his alley. In his free time, David collected stamps, firearms, and hunted for treasures at auctions. He loved to read, travel, and watch science fiction movies.
After moving into assisted living, he discovered new talents such as painting and jewelry making. He was a regular at bible study and a supporter of the Scouts. He was voted in as resident liaison because he made every resident feel special. For four years, David was in high demand as the Bingo caller. Residents loved the way he included everyone and became unruly if a substitute caller was sent in—they took their bingo seriously. He didn’t even like bingo, but felt he had an important role to play in his new community.
David was preceded in death by his brothers, Stephen and Jerome Smith. He is survived by his son, Erik Allen Smith and wife Melody; his daughter, Sherri Ruhl and husband Jason; grandchildren, Avery Allen, Gabriel, Justin, Katherine, Madeline; brothers, Christopher and Michael; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at 11:00 am at Severn Cemetery with military honors.
