AHOSKIE, NC – Delmo Gene Dawson, known to friends and family as Gene, peacefully passed away on July 9, 2023, in Hertford County, North Carolina. He was born on November 15, 1946, in Paynesville, West Virginia. Gene lived a fulfilling life and leaves behind cherished memories.

Throughout his work life, Gene had various occupations. He was the proud proprietor of Dawsons Christmas Tree Farm and had a successful career as a home builder. He also worked with Perdue Chicken Houses and was a retired machinist from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Additionally, Gene possessed remarkable skills as a cabinet maker, showcasing his talent and precision. After many years of hard work, he enjoyed a well-deserved retirement.

Outside of work, Gene had a deep passion for nature and the great outdoors. An avid hunter and fisher, he found solace in spending time surrounded by the beauty of nature. These ventures provided him with endless joy and peaceful moments throughout his lifetime.

Gene’s family extend a heartfelt thank you to ECU Health Home Health and Hospice staff, as well as his caregivers, Srhonda and Gwen, for their unwavering support and care.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents; Eva Dawson-Stoyer and Leona Lee Dawson, his stepfather, Irvin Stoyer as well as his brother Larry Dawson.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, and their children. He leaves behind two daughters, Tamula Mullins (Ronald) of Omaha, NE, and Kathy Garrett (Anthony) of Ahoskie. Additionally, Gene will be remembered fondly by his twin sons, Jaret Lee Dawson (Barbara) of Ahoskie and Joseph Lee Dawson (Holly) of Courtland, VA. Also surviving are his grandchildren; Kenny, Christina, Alex, Melanie, Jaret Jr., Stacy, Grady, Shelby, Eijah, Thomas (TJ), Sarah, and Jade; his brother, Robert Dawson (Lucille) of Suffolk, VA, and his sister, Delois Sensabaugh of Winterhaven, FL. Furthermore, he had eight great grandchildren and a vast network of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will always hold him dear in their hearts.

Let us gather to celebrate Gene’s life and legacy. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at 2:00 pm at the Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service in Ahoskie, NC. The ECU Health Home Health and Hospice Chaplain Jason Braswell will be officiating the service.
