AULANDER, NC – Dessie Matthews White, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at the Windsor House of Windsor, NC.
Mrs. White was born on October 9, 1929 to Henry Matthews, Sr. and Daisy Broglin Matthews in Ahoskie, NC. She was a devoted member of Ebenezer Assembly of God Church. Dessie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She was a talented seamstress and loved to crochet. Dessie was known for her great cooking, especially her awesome biscuits. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all that knew her.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde “Pete” Morris, second husband, Vernon White, Sr.; two sons, Richard and Alton Morris, her twin sister, Jessie Cobb, brother, Billy Matthews, and grandson, Christopher Lee Morris.
Dessie is survived by her son, Thurman Morris and wife Christine of Aulander; four sisters, Martha Mizelle of Askewville, Edna Baker and husband Tommy of Askewville, Mary Jane Felton of Ahoskie, and Shirley Matthews of Windsor; three brothers, Henry Matthews and wife Barbara, Bobby Lee Matthews and wife Jean, Jimmy Wayne Matthews and wife Pat all of Ahoskie; three granddaughters, Angel Mizelle, Dawn Pridgen, and Stephanie Lassiter; two grandsons, Jason Morris, and Ricky Morris; eight great-grandchildren, Donna Jernigan, Monica, & Alex Mizelle, Caleb & Josh Morris; James & Will Pridgen, and Chance Lassiter; two great great-grandchildren, Ally and Olivia Jernigan; seven step-children; 12 step-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Arlene Matthews of Aulander; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening, January 10, 2020 from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC and other times at the home of her son, Thurman Morris.
A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 11:00 am, at the Ebenezer Assembly of God Church, Aulander, NC, with Rev. Tim Parker and Rev. Chuck Gray, officiating. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery, Aulander, NC.
