Donald Gilbert Jones, age 77, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, NC.
A native of Bertie County, Mr. Jones was born on June 9, 1941 to Herman and Beulah Mae Banty Jones in Roxobel, NC. Donnie dedicated his life to serving our country in the United States Marine Corps. SSgt Jones began his service in 1966 in Okinawa, Japan where he met his wife Yukie Matsumoto, and they were married September of 1968. During his service in the Corps, Donnie received the following decorations, medals, badges, and campaign ribbons: Rifle Marksman Badge, Meritorious Mast (2nd Award), National Defense Service Medal, Pistol Sharpshooter Badge, Certificate of Commendation, Good Conduct Medal (with 6*), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal (with 1960-), Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (with 1*), Letter of Appreciation, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation Gallantry Cross (with Palm and Frame)
Upon retirement Donnie enjoyed being outdoors. He was an avid hunter and kept his yard well groomed. Donnie will be missed by all that knew him.
Besides his parents, Donnie was preceded in death by his sisters, Myrtle Lassiter and Ruby Lassiter, and his brother, Ray Jones.
Donnie is survived by his wife, Yukie, brother, Roger Jones and wife JoAnn of Hampton, VA; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will honor Donnie’s wishes by choosing not to have a funeral.
