Indian Trail, NC—Doris Tittsworth Taylor, age 92, passed away on May 6, 2023 at Atrium Health Union West Hospital Stallings, NC.

Doris was born in Knoxville, TN on December 21, 1930, the only daughter of the late William E and Ellen Tittsworth. She was a 1948 graduate of Knoxville High School in Tennessee. After high school, she received her BA degree from Carson Newman College. In 1954, Doris married the love of her life, Hargus Taylor in Knoxville Tennessee. From the union, two children were born who they loved and supported without hesitation. She was an Elementary teacher, a stay-at-home mom, and spent most of her career as the Assistant Acquisition librarian at Chowan University until her retirement. She called Murfreesboro, NC home from 1963 to 2020. Doris and Hargus were longtime members of Murfreesboro Baptist Church where she served as children’s choir director, Sunday School teacher and a member of the Chancel Choir as well as other church committees. Both Doris and Hargus were very active in Hertford County Habitat for Humanity. Her focus was working with the Habitat Resale Store. They both had a quiet but immense impact on the Murfreesboro community and beyond, especially because of the endless number of Chowan students’ lives they both personally impacted. This was their life calling as Christian servant leaders.

Left to cherish her memory and give glory to God for her life are her 2 children Warren Taylor, and wife Lisa of Indian Trail, NC; her daughter Marcia Thompson and husband, Philip of Sioux Falls, SD; a granddaughter Jessica Longino and husband, Walter of Monroe, NC; four grandsons, William Taylor and wife Kelly of Waxhaw, NC, Nathanael Thompson and fiancé Nikki Rosenberger of Perrysburg, OH; Andrew Thompson and Matthew Thompson of Sioux Falls, SD; and 4 great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Liam Taylor and Elise and James Longino.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 AM Wednesday May 10th outside under the covered driveway at the back of the church. A celebration of life service will follow at 11:00 AM in the Murfreesboro Baptist Church Sanctuary, with Dr. Philip Thompson presiding. A private burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to The Hargus and Doris Taylor Scholarship Fund, Chowan University Development Office, 1 University Drive, Murfreesboro, NC 27855 or online by  clicking here; or to Murfreesboro Baptist Church, 200 West Main Street, Murfreesboro, NC 27855 or online by clicking here

Warren, I was so sorry to hear that you lost your Mom. She was such a sweet lady. I will always remember that she let me join her children’s choir even before my family joined Murfreesboro Baptist Church. She was the catalyst that started our history with that church. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Warren, Marsha and and all your family, we loved your Mom & Dad so very much! I was blessed to work with Doris twice at Chowan, in Whitaker Library. I worked as a student worker in the back processing books, then I worked in Circulation & Reference in the early 1990’s. Alan & I both came to know and love Dr. Taylor, “Chap” as he was known in our BSU group. They both were wonderful, giving and sweet people. We’re so sorry for your loss. But take comfort that she and your Dad are together with our LORD, whom they served graciously. So many fond memories of them! Love to you all, especially our sweet friend Marsha!
