Edward Earl Etheridge, age 87, of Scotland Neck, passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2020 at his home.

Ed will be remembered as a strong family man who loved his family greatly, especially his two great-granddaughters.  A man of few words, he was “a go with the flow” kind of guy who was liked by everyone.  He worked at Shields Fertilizer in Scotland Neck as Plant Manager for over 45 years. He loved coon hunting and, along with Bo House, took kids on hunts with the Clark Gun Club. He was known for loading up the neighborhood kids every Saturday for outings and also took them dove hunting every year.  Ed was a Mason with Scotland Neck Lodge #689  and a member of the Scotland Neck Junior Order.  He was also a member of the Scotland Neck United Methodist Church and a past volunteer with the Scotland Neck Fire Department.  Ed was a truly great man and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou Etheridge; his parents, Herman and Willie Mae VanLandingham Etheridge; his second wife, Jeanette Burke; his grandson, Michael Turner; and his sister, Sara Whitehead.

He is survived by his son, Ed Etheridge, Jr. and wife Susan of Scotland Neck; his daughter, Tammy Johnson and husband Bryan of Newport; two sisters, Lynn Todd of Sunset Beach and Frances Patterson and husband Pete of Williamston; two granddaughters, Ashley Lund and husband Mike of New Hill and Lauren Turner of Rocky Mount; and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Avery Lund.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2020 at Letchworth-Sykes Funeral Service in Scotland Neck.

A celebration of life graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2020 at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck, with Rev. Dusty Sprouse officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Scotland Neck United Methodist Church, 110 West 9th Street, Scotland Neck, NC 27874 or online by clicking here.

Got to know him through his in-laws Mr. and Mrs. Judge, who lived next door to me in Hobgood. Simply a great person to know and talk to. Scotland Neck and that generation at its best.

Dear Ed, Tammy and families,

I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Ed. In our opinion they didn’t come any better; seeing him constantly up at Shields as well as around town he was one of the nicest men we ever knew. I know he was a great father to you both and I always talked to Ed about him at the grocery store when Mr Ed couldn”t get out anymore telling him we said hey. Please know our deepest prayers are with you all now but I know God will help you through this. Hold on to the memories and good times; they are the greatest gifts. Tammy miss seeing you and pray you are doing well. God bless

I am so sorry to learn of this. I worked with Ed at Shields for several years and he was just a great guy, loved his family, was quiet until he had something to say or to crack a joke. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.,

Ed, Tammy and family,

Thinking of y’all during your time of sorrow and loss. Your father was one of the good ones and made for great childhood memories. The last time I was in SN, I had lunch with him at the Freez, had a great “catching up “‘ conversation.
May God comfort you during this time.
