Elizabeth Ann Warren Phillips

May 23, 1928 - March 24, 2020

05/23/1928 - 03/24/2020

Elizabeth Ann Warren Phillips, age 91, died on, March 24, 2020, having lived a full and wonderful life.

May 23, 1928, Elizabeth Ann Warren was born to Garnie Benjamin Warren and Stella Jane Martin in a house that still stands on High Street in Murfreesboro.

Her greatest joy was her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. After her three children became adults Elizabeth turned her interest to enhancing and preserving Murfreesboro and the place it holds in the history of the Roanoke Chowan area. For decades Elizabeth’s interest in gardening fueled her work at the Wheeler house garden. Many trips to historic Williamsburg for classes kept the garden true to its historic time period.  Later when the garden became too much for Elizabeth and Dewey, she became the site manager for the Wheeler House. Again, she traveled to Williamsburg, but also to East Carolina University, Richmond, VA, Raleigh, and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) in Winston-Salem to ensure that the historic buildings in Murfreesboro reflected their proper place in time. Elizabeth was knowledgeable not only about historic buildings in Murfreesboro but their place in the history of our state and region. Not a week went by that she did not share that knowledge to make the historic areas more accurate and inviting to tourists.  Elizabeth lived a life rich in friends and family, always ready with a pot of homemade soup or flowers for anyone needing their spirits lifted.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband of 71 years, Dewey Phillips, Jr., two daughters, Deborah Pedersen and her husband, Neil, of Chapel Hill, and Geri Bradshaw and her husband, Keith, of Murfreesboro; seven grandchildren, Angela Vaught and her husband, Rob, of Kill Devil Hills, Brandon Dewey Phillips and his wife, Eve, of Wilmington, Ashleigh Phillips, of Baltimore, MD, and Sarah Beth Phillips of Jackson, Kyle Pedersen and his wife, Suzi, of Asheville, Nora Pedersen of Los Angeles, CA, and Beth Stratton of Richmond, VA; four great grandchildren, Sophia Vaught, Fisher Dewey Phillips, Magnolia and Beau Pedersen. Elizabeth was predeceased by her son Dewey Laverne Phillips, her parents, and her two siblings.

Due to the circumstances with COVID-19, the family will have a private graveside service at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro.

In lieu of flowers please give a memorial gift to the Murfreesboro United Methodist Church, 313 East High Street, Murfreesboro, NC, 27855, or online by clicking here or the Murfreesboro Historic Association, PO Box 3, Murfreesboro, NC 27855 or online by clicking here
