MENOLA, NC – Ernestine Vinson Northcott, age 97, of Menola community, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at her home.
Mrs. Northcott was born on January 19, 1923 to William Harvey Vinson and Vernie Stephenson Vinson in Menola, NC. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Ernestine graduated from Woodland-Olney High School and then from East Carolina Teacher’s College and went on to retire from teaching for Hertford County Public Schools. She was a devoted member of Menola Baptist Church serving in many capacities, Deaconess, Sunday school teacher, WMU Director, and GA leader. She was a member of The Menola Community Club, and a former member of the Ahoskie Women’s Club. She enjoyed playing bridge as long as her vision would allow her. Ernestine was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all that knew her.
Along with her parents, Ernestine was preceded in death by her loving husband, Gilbert Blowe Northcott, her brothers, William Harvey Vinson, Jr., and Lee Stephenson Vinson, and a sister-in-law, Linda Pell Vinson.
Ernestine is survived by her daughter, Gwen Northcott of Menola; son, Jon Northcott, and wife Judi of Murfreesboro; and granddaughter, Stephanie Northcott of Raleigh, NC.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, August 24, 2020, 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, and other times at the home.
A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, 11:00 am at the Menola Baptist Church, Menola, NC, with Rev. Willie McLawhorn officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, NC.
The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Charles Sawyer, Amedisys Hospice, Janice Askew, Diane Bazemore, Regina Sessoms, Sherry Felton, Crystal Jenkins, Gail Pridgen, and Ruth Felton for the love and care shown to Mrs. Northcott during her decline in health.

So sorry to hear of your mother’s death. She was such a good friend and mentor to me when I began teaching in Ahoskie. She was such a gracious and loving person. Keeping your family in my prayers.

Gwen and Jon, I have such fond memories of your beautiful mother. When we would all hang out at your house as teens, she was always so kind, caring, and smiling. May your sweet memories sustain you until you meet again.
So sorry to her of your mom’s passing. Knew her thru bus trips with her dear friend, Mabel Jordan from Winton. We had some good times. She was a very sweet lady!
