Eugene “Wright” Emory, Jr., 64, of Nags Head, NC died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, March 16, 2022.

Wright was born on November 9, 1957 in Hertford County and grew up in Rich Square, NC. He was the son of the late Eugene and Ann Lassiter Emory. He was a member of Rich Square United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Northeast Academy and attended North Carolina State University and Campbell University. Wright began his career in Raleigh, NC, working with Games and Gadgets (later Electronics Boutique). His position there evolved into several years working and living in King of Prussia, PA and abroad in London, England, and Brisbane, Australia. Wright lived a full and diverse life. Among his hobbies were diving, sailing, and golf. He enjoyed attending theater productions in both New York and Durham, NC with his family and friends. Wright’s true passion has always been photography since he was in high school. He loved action, sports, and outdoor photography. His love of sports photography led to his own business, OBX Sportshots.

He returned to the U.S. in 1997 to reside in his favorite location in the whole world, the Outer Banks of NC. He was employed at the Outer Banks Hospital in Dare County.

Wright is survived by his brother, Scott and his wife, Julie, of Lasker; and his only niece and the apple of his eye, Rebecca of Greenville.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, 2022 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square.

A celebration of life graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 21, 2022 at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made directly to Northeast Academy, 210 Church Street, Lasker, NC 27845 or online by clicking here.

Wright will be remembered as a wonderful brother, uncle, cousin, and nephew, but most of all as a fun-loving friend who lived a full and rich life and will be truly missed.

He left us way too soon but memories of him will live forever in my heart. I know he’s impressing the angels now with his Broadway repertoire. His family (Scott, Julie, and Rebecca) are in my prayers.

Wright was a colleague, friend, confidant and kindred spirit. It was our mutual love of photography and our mutual respect of each other that we shared. We spent a lot of time together over the last 4 years. We had a safety bubble during covid. Wright was the only person had my wife and I had personal contact with – he would come over to our house and we would talk for hours about photography. After shooting High School sports for hours and hours we would afterwards go out together for dinner and talk for hours about photography. While we also talked about some other subjects the topic always returned to photography. He was excited that now he had secured the task of shooting team and athletes photos for several local schools. I am in Germany now and as Wright and I would message each other almost every day his last message to me was “safe travels.” Safe travels to you my dear friend. I hope that you have an unlimited account at the photo store in heaven. I cannot express how much I will miss you.

I was with sadness to learn of the passing of Wright. What an extraordinary life he led! I loved his wildlife photography and play reviews but especially running into him at ballgames photographing the players! My sympathy to the family for the loss of this special man loved by so many.
