10/27/1936 - 07/02/2023

AHOSKIE, NC – Frances Paige Courtney, beloved and devoted member of Ahoskie Methodist Church, peacefully passed away on July 2, 2023, at the age of 86. Paige was born on October 27, 1936, in Norfolk, Virginia, to her late parents, Albert Henry Wood and Mary Hodges Wood.

Paige dedicated her life to education, spending twenty-five years as a teacher in the New York Public Schools system. She then continued her passion for educating young minds at Ridgcroft School from 1984 until her retirement in 2001. Paige’s commitment to nurturing and shaping the lives of countless students left an indelible mark on the educational community.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Paige actively volunteered her time at Roanoke Chowan Hospital and the Ahoskie Food Pantry. With a compassionate heart, she selflessly offered support and care to those in need within her community. Paige held a special place in her heart for animals and birds, finding solace and peace in their presence. An avid reader, she found great joy in exploring the realm of literature.

Paige will be deeply missed by her surviving family and friends. She leaves behind her niece, Marsha Lane of Ahoskie, NC; two nephews, Preston Wood of Nags Head, NC, and Cal Wood and his wife Tracy of Athens, Ohio; three great nieces, Skylar Wood, Kelly Morin and her husband Will of Fuquay Varina, and Virginia Lemmon and her husband Josh of Franklinton, NC; her cousin, William Darden of Ahoskie; as well as a great-great niece and nephew, Payton and Logan Morin.

Paige Courtney will forever be remembered for her unwavering dedication to education and her compassionate spirit. While her passing leaves a void in our lives, we take comfort in knowing that she has been reunited with her loved ones who preceded her in death, including her father, mother, and her brother, Calvin Harding Wood.

The family will celebrate Paige’s life at a later date. May her soul find eternal peace, and may her memory continue to inspire us all.

She was a JEWEL… for sure. She would always sit in the pew behind me in church… and I think about her, always, from time-to-time. She was one of those people who made life better, wherever she was.

I am saddened to hear of her death. I was her pastor for six years in the 1990’s. She was a delightful person and had a beautiful smile. May God give comfort to her loved ones.
