SCOTLAND NECK – Gail Williams Poteat, age 86, of Windsor, VA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at her residence.

She was born on January 26, 1938 to Bandy and Lucy Morgan Williams in Marion, NC. Gail was the first person to be awarded a high school diploma in the local Industrial Education Center program. She married Billy Poteat on May 7, 1954 and they enjoyed 58 years of marriage.  She was instrumental in working alongside her husband in building Hope Free Will Baptist Church, where they pastored for twenty-four years. Gail created a business in photography and she and Billy retired at the same time. She enjoyed traveling with her Sunday School class from the Good News Baptist Church in Chesapeake, VA. Her friends she traveled with nicknamed her “Tripsy” as she would always be the first to sign up for trips. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Gail was preceded in death by her mother, Lucy Williams; her father, Harold Bandy Williams; and her husband, Billy Poteat.

She is survived by her daughter, Becky Poteat Acree and her husband Garry of Windsor, VA; and two grandsons, Jonathan Acree and his wife Molly of Chesapeake, VA and Tyler Acree of Hampton, VA.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Friday, April 26, 2024 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service – Letchworth Chapel in Scotland Neck. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck, with Rev. Matt Jones officiating.

What a joyful soul she was. Kind, always smiling and full of the SPIRIT. She and her husband were such a beautiful blessing to our community and I will always be grateful for them both.
