Gene Autry Britton, age 80, passed away on March 13, 2018 at his home.
Mr. Britton was born in Northampton County on November 14, 1937, a son of the late Dallas B. and Doris Jones Britton. He graduated from Chowan Junior College, earning his Associate in Science Degree. Gene furthered his education at NC State University earning his Bachelor of Science Degree, with high honors, in Mechanical Engineering. While at NC State he joined the Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Gene was retired as an aerospace engineer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Hampton, VA. During his career with NASA, Gene was privileged to work on the Apollo 11 space mission, helping achieve the first landing on the moon. He was awarded the prestigious Apollo Achievement Award from NASA. Gene enjoyed spending time with his mother, especially riding her on his Harley Davidson. He loved working on engines and tinkering on things.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sue Howerton.
Gene is survived by his caregiver, Donna Myrick of Jackson, NC; and nephew, Chris Howerton and his wife Phyllis of Rich Square, NC.
The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.
The family will welcome any visits from friends at any time at their homes.

I also was a classmate of GENE BRITTON, graduating with the Jackson High School Class of 1955. It is my belief that each classmate feels a special pride of Gene and his outstanding accomplishments with NASA.

So long for now old Buddy. I will never regret giving you your flowers while you were still alive to enjoy, that evening at Sarah’s house. Will join you soon old Buddy!!!!! Last one of us OUT will bring the 57 Chevy!!!!
