AHOSKIE, NC- Helen Louise Cowey born April 11, 1961 in York, PA.

Helen went to be with Jesus on Monday April 18, 2022. Helen was 61, she was the youngest of 6 children, Helen loved her family. The doctors told her mom she wouldn’t live much past the age of 12 but she did, and boy did she live. Everyone that knew Helen loved her and her excitement for life. Helen was a special person whose friendly personality and great laugh made people love her, ask her how she was doing, and she would always answer “fantastic”.

Some of her very favorite things were her 4:00 snacks: a honeybun and a Mt Dew, hugs from her mom when she got home from school, love of horses, playing her guitar, being an avid NC State fan, and the love of anything John Deere.

When she was old enough, she was enrolled in special education classes in the public schools, where she made many friends and learned a lot. As an adult she worked several jobs after which she attended adult day care center in Roanoke Rapids, NC, where she enjoyed many activities, parties especially her birthday parties and dances, as well as dressing up for Halloween. She loved county music, the Gaither Vocal Band, enjoying many hours of listening to her music.

One of Helen’s biggest loves was the love of her church and her church family, and they loved her and always made a fuss over her.

Her later years were spent at the Ahoskie House. Several of the girls became like her family, she was everyone’s baby. The care she received there will be forever remembered.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Cowey and a brother, Dale Cowey.

Helen is survived by her mother Mary Smyser Davis, three sisters, Linda Singleton and husband Gary of Brooksville, FL, Robin D. Barwick and husband Larry of Palmyra, VA, and Carol Cowey of Scotland Neck, NC; brother, Tom Cowey and wife Pam of Spring Hill, FL; sister-in-law, Marie Cowey of New Bern, NC, and many aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of life graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2022, at 11:30 A.M. at Sunnyside Cemetery, Scotland Neck, NC, with Rev. Matthew Jones, officiating.

Helen was precious. She was a great hugger, loving her family and friends even those she “adopted”. She loved the outdoors and flowers and I loved her. She called me Grandma and was a joy to me. She will be missed and I will hold her in my heart. My sympathy goes out to her family.

Everyone loved Helen and we always loved her coming to church at Hope Free Will Baptist Church. Almost every time she came, she would request Jesus Loves Me. I would usually grant her wish and we would sing it just for her. She truly loved Jesus and now she is at home with Him. We have truly missed Helen since she was put in the nursing home. She is perfect now! We love you Helen in heaven.
