ROXOBEL, NC – Helen Mace Smith, age 92, passed away on February 14, 2017 at the Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, NC.
Mrs. Smith was born on October 22, 1924 to the late Clarence and Myrtle Mace in Champaign, IL. Helen was a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church. She was widowed at an early age and dedicated her life to her children and her work all while taking care of her mother. She also took great pride in her home and raising her children as a single parent. Helen was most proud of her work as the town clerk for the Town of Roxobel for many years. Helen enjoyed reading, and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many who will be deeply missed.
Helen is survived by her son, Richard “Dickie” Smith and wife Shirley of Newport News, VA; three daughters, Jo Ann Medford and husband John, Sr., of Rich Square, NC, Marsha Moore and husband Ty, of Winterville, NC, and Sandra Askew and husband Paul, of Eure, NC; five granddaughters, Gina Moore of Newport News, Stacey Craig and husband Stephen of Fredericksburg, VA, Leigh Russell and husband Roger of Vanceboro, NC, Lisa Pittman and husband Joseph Edward III, of Kelford, NC, and Ashley Askew of Eure, NC; two grandsons, John Smith Medford Jr. and wife Christy, of Roxobel, NC, and Lyndon Askew of Eure, NC; along with 12 great-grandchildren, and a very special caregiver, Kathy Byrum.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital and Vidant Hospice for the care that was given to Mrs. Helen.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Friday, February 17, 2017, at 1:00 pm at the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery, Roxobel, NC, with the Rev. Willie McLawhorn and Rev. Ray Brickhouse, officiating.
