Hope Whittington Preast, age 92, of Middlesex, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, January 7, 2024.

Hope was born on February 24, 1931 to John Andrew and Minnie Avery Whittington in Scotland Neck.  She was married to Dewey B. Preast, Sr. in January 1955 and to this marriage was born three children. Hope retired from the NC Correctional Center for Women in Raleigh, where she worked in health care services for thirty-two years.  An avid reader, Hope loved going to the beach, where she enjoyed pier fishing and companionship with her friends.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.   At home she was happiest in the kitchen, preparing meals for those she loved, even the birds, squirrels and deer never left with an empty stomach.  Hope was a member of the Eastern Star until her death and was a past Worthy Matron for Milbrook OES#293 of Raleigh.

In addition to her parents Hope was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dewey Benson Preast; and her brothers, James and Kenneth Whittington.

She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Preast Cooper and her husband Rick of Concord; her sons, Dewey B. Preast, Jr. and Wendy Diaz of Wilmington and John E. Preast and his wife Bekki of Garner; five grandchildren, Dewey B. Preast, III of Hapeville, GA, Dr. June L. Preast of Cottondale, AL, Andrew S. Cooper and Cathryn of Anderson, SC, Daniel B. Cooper of Washington, DC and Nikolas R. Preast and his wife Katee of Wendell; and two great-great grandchildren, Virginia and Paisley.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at the Baptist Cemetery in Scotland Neck, with Rev. Dusty Sprouse officiating.
