AHOSKIE – Jack M. Newsome, age 83, of Ahoskie, passed away on Monday, November 21st at home on Early Station Road.
Mr. Newsome was a graduate of Ahoskie High School and served as class vice president. In high school, he was ‘All-State’ in football, playing on the undefeated 1948 Ahoskie High School Team. He played in the inaugural East-West All Star Football Game in Greensboro in 1949.
Jack attended East Carolina University and graduated from Chowan College in 1951. He served in the United States Army, and then returned to the Newsome family farm, where he worked as an agri-businessman for over 58 years.
A life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church, he was also a friend to the Ahoskie United Methodist Church. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed visiting his brother in Norfolk, Virginia weekly.
Newsome was dedicated to his nieces and nephews and they ‘adored’ their Uncle Jack.
He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Goldie Brown Newsome and father Lloyd I. Newsome. He is survived by three brothers: Lloyd I. Newsome, Jr., and wife, Delores of Southern Pines, NC, Henry E. Newsome of Chesapeake, VA; and John L. Newsome and wife, Lisa of Ahoskie. He has two nieces, Rhonda Ruth Nuelling and husband, Alvin of Madison, WI, and Holli Brown Swenson and husband, Bryan of Alexandria, VA; and three nephews, Lester Lloyd Newsome of Laurinburg, NC, Ronald Stuart Newsome of Pinehurst, NC, and James Edward Jackson Newsome of Raleigh, NC.
The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home on Friday, November 25, 2011 from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. A graveside celebration of life service will be conducted at the Ahoskie Cemetery on Saturday, November 26th at 2:00 p.m. with military honors.
