A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 4, 2007 at Letchworth Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery. The Reverend Stanley Buck will be presiding.
James is a native of Halifax County. He was the son of the late Julian Harvey Phelps and Clydie Phillips Phelps. He was a retired rural letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and retired in 1989 as a tobacco farmer.
James was an avid golfer and attended First Free Will Baptist Church of Tarboro and was a member of Nahalah Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dorothy "Dot" Phelps of Scotland Neck; daughter Terry Dickens and husband David of Ayden; son Allen Phelps Esq. of Atlanta, GA; brother Elbert Phelps and wife Miriam of Scotland Neck; two grandchildren, Chris Dickens and Mathew Dickens of Ayden; several nieces and nephews; and a special golfing buddy Charles Beck of Tarboro. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Audrey Phelps.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, June 3, 2007 at Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
