AHOSKIE, NC – James “Pete” Edward Whitaker, age 92, of Hwy 561 East, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2020 at the Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, NC.

Mr. Whitaker was born on October 20, 1927 to Namon and Belle Clark Whitaker in Martin County, NC. “Pete” was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, He cherished his family and enjoyed having cook outs and spending time with everyone. He worked as a planer mill foreman for Georgia Pacific for 50 years before retiring in 1990. When he was not working or enjoying a family get together you could find him gardening or on the river fishing, which was his favorite past time. Pete will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Besides his parents, “Pete” was preceded in death by his wife, June Lewis Whitaker, sisters, Virginia Lassiter, and Faye Sawyer, and brothers, Buck, Tommy, Joe, and Bobby Whitaker.

 

“Pete” is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Gray Whitaker; two sons, Charles Ray Whitaker and wife Linda, and Dennis “Mike” Michael Whitaker Sr. and wife Brenda all of Ahoskie; three granddaughters, Laura Joyner of Murfreesboro, Jennifer Hathaway and husband John of Roxobel, and Sherri Farmer of Ahoskie; two grandsons, Dennis Whitaker Jr. and wife Brittany of Ahoskie, and Timothy Whitaker and wife Makayla of Ahoskie; seven great-grandsons, Grayson, Daniel, Alston, Tyler, Brantley, Cayden, and Ethan; two great-granddaughters, Camryn, and Lilli; a sister, Ruby Edmondson of Williamston; his special fur baby, Goldie; along with a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, July 12, 2020, from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, and other times at the home.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Monday, July 13, 2020, at 11:00 am at the Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Mark Warren officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, NC 27910

Prayers to the family. I can see them all sitting around the big table up there. Pete Whiather-Pete Williowbe–Jimmy MCkeel– Jimmy Williams–Al Roberson–John Taylor and so many more. You all were great sitting around joking and fixing the worlds problems. Oh but the world is so different today. Loved you all.
