GREENVILLE, NC – James Walter Bryant, Jr., a beloved father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away at the age of 82 on January 21, 2024, in Lenoir County, North Carolina. He was born on June 21, 1941, in Southampton County, Virginia.

James worked hard throughout his life and dedicated many years to the Cotton Gin before retiring. He started working on the farm at a young age, leaving school behind. James was known for his love of fishing and his passion for tinkering with various things. His tools were off-limits to others, as he treasured them dearly. To many, he was affectionately known as “Santa.” During this time of grieving, may all those who loved James find solace in their cherished memories and the support of one another. His warm smile, generous spirit, and tinkering hands will forever be engraved in our hearts.

James is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Banks of Greenville, NC, Crystal Ingalls of FL, and his son Walter E. Bryant (Donna Doak) of Ayden, NC. Additionally, he leaves behind two stepdaughters, Jeannie Diaz (Robert) of Chesapeake, VA, and Angel Christopher of Bethel; sister Joan Rae of VA and brother Raymond Bryant (Rita) of Stedman, NC. He will be fondly remembered by his nine grandsons; William “Billy” Bryant of Greenville, Thomas “Tommy” Bryant (April) of Tarboro, NC, George “Tony” Bryant (Sharon) of Barco, NC, Shane Donnelly of Greenville, NC, Dusty Bryant of Marion, VA, R.J. Diaz and Alex Diaz of Chesapeake, Austin Christopher of Bethel, and Gabriel Basquez of Bethal; three granddaughters, Amanda  Wells (Phillip) of FL, and Amber Toften of Washington, NC, and Lily Diaz of Chesapeake; who also survive him. James shared a special bond with his girlfriend, Annie Mae Hoell of Robersonville. In addition to his immediate family, James will be deeply missed by his 16 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who mourn his loss.

James was preceded in death by his father, James Walter Bryant Sr., his mother, Irene Drake Bryant, his son Joseph Bryant, and his brother Lloyd “Buck” Bryant.
