AULANDER- Jane Patricia Hughes Barmer, age 85, of St. John-Millennium Road, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2021, at her home.
Miss Jane was born on May 30, 1936 to the late Clayton Sylvester and Addie Perry Hughes in Bertie County, NC. Jane lived her life in dedication to her community, especially the children. She worked many years with kindergarteners at Aulander Elementary School, and formed life-long friendships with teachers, staff, and the students she taught. She taught Sunday School her entire adult life, wrote scripts for Christmas pageants, and tutored and mentored many neighborhood kids. The love of her life, Coy Barmer, was always by her side until his death in 2004. After retiring, they traveled, enjoyed grand-children, and the peace that comes with lives well-lived and full of friends. Miss Jane, as many called her, was quiet and unassuming. Her unwavering faith was her strength through many difficult times. Bird-watching with a cup of coffee, a challenging puzzle book in hand, and close friends by her side were the simple joys that sustained her. She will be missed by so many, but is finally free to meet her Savior and those who have gone before her.
Along with her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her loving husband, McCoy “Coy” Barmer; two brothers, Donnis Hughes and Fred Hughes; and two sisters, Millie Alston and Velma Francis.
Left to cherish Jane’s memory is her, daughter, Lori Barmer and husband Elmer Gibson of Apex, NC; son, Greg Barmer and wife Lisa of Washington, NC; two granddaughters, Lea Clayton of Apex, NC, and Sarah Kniola and husband Hunter of Indianapolis, IN; a grandson, Andrew Barmer of Mooresville, NC; great-granddaughter, Lydia Kniola of Indianapolis, IN; a sister, Sue Hughes of Florida, as well as many friends.
A graveside celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, September 12, 2021, at 3:00 pm at the Aulander Cemetery, Aulander, NC, with Rev. Greg Hurdle, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Jane’s honor to the Oak Grove Baptist Church, PO Box 247, Aulander, NC, 27805, or online by clicking here

Greg , kindest thoughts for you and your family as you mourn the loss of your Mom. After reading her obituary it’s easy to understand your grace and your dedication to spreading God’s Word . Blessings , Jeff and Robin
I did not know “Miss Jane” but know Greg, Lisa, Andrew and Sarah very well. From reading about her life, she has obviously left the legacy of her sweet spirit and love of the Lord to her family. Prayers for peace and comfort.
I am sorry to hear of the passing of your mom Lori and Gregg. She and I would occasionally see each other maybe at the grocery and I would always stop to say hello. I would, most often, asked about you Lori and tell your mom to say hello. I hope you got some of those messages. I know it’s been a long time but I never forgot you and our “good old days.” God bless you and the family during this major change in your life with the home going of your mom. She was a very sweet lady!
So sorry to hear passing of your mom will be thinking of you alli in the days ahead.
Our family was blessed to have known Jane for over 70 years, since she was one of my sister Carolyn’s best friends at Aulander High School. When I last saw her several years ago, I marveled at how little she had changed, and was as warm and engaging as ever. Today and always, may fond memories bring her loved ones peace, comfort and joy.
We were so fortunate to know this wonderful, smart, funny lady, if only for a few years. She will be so missed. A beautiful life. RIP
