Jeffrey Chappell Rose died peacefully at his home after a long illness on September 2, 2022. Jeff was predeceased by his parents Walter Franklin Sr. and Dorethea Chappell Rose of Ahoskie. Jeff loved the outdoors and was passionate about wildlife.  He loved fishing, duck hunting, tying flies, and collecting baseball cards.  He was proud of his aquariums where he raised discus, a rare form of fish from the amazon.  Jeff was an avid open-wheel and Indy car race fan.  His favorite races were the Indy 500, as well as the Formula One races at Watkins Glen, NY, and Long Beach, CA, although he followed races globally. Jeff was a native of Surry County but moved to Hertford County as a pre-teen. He attended schools in Hertford and Bertie County, and later, Fishburne Military Academy.  Jeff attended Chowan University.  His entire career was spent working for his family-owned business, Rose Brothers Paving, where he was a partner. Even with his work demands, Jeff found time to pursue his love for drawing and military history research.

He leaves behind his wife, Jeanna Giles Rose of Virginia Beach, his son, Holt Chappell Rose (Kelsey) of Murfreesboro, his daughter O’Anna Nicholson Rose of Manteo, and his special joy, grandson, Colvin Holt Rose of Murfreesboro.  He also leaves behind his stepchildren, Meagan Parker (Dusty), Kerri Tibbits, Lori Crawford, James Crawford, Melanie Pierce, and numerous step-grandchildren. Others include brothers Walter Franklin Rose Jr. (Penny) of Ahoskie and Eugene Timothy Rose (Susan) of Wake Forest, uncle Herman and aunt Ruth Burcham of Booneville, aunt Anna Faye of Asheville, cousins Larry Rose (Cynthia) of Ahoskie, Beverly Spicer of Ahoskie, Mark Rose of Hertford, Eric Rose (Molli) of Murfreesboro, mother of Holt and O’Anna, Constance Holt Rose of Manteo, and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of Jeff’s life on October 29, 2022, at 2 pm at the Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service Chapel in Ahoskie, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Ducks Unlimited (https://www.ducks.org/support/donateOnlineSecure.aspx?promoKey=MemorialHonorGiving&ID=4889 or Fishburne Military Academy (https://www.fishburne.org/support/make-a-gift/)

Jeff was a classmate and close friend growing up in Ahoskie, NC. We played JV football together under Coach Murray and Coach Mitchell. We were lineman and practiced on the old band field that never saw a blade of grass and was always dusty. These types of conditions bonded teammates. In 1982 Jeff and his friend Charles took my brother Mike and me to the Indianapolis 500. That trip stood as a wonderful memory and talking point whenever I saw Jeff. I fondly remember Jeff and his hearty laugh, impish grin, and love of motor sports. Sadly, we’ve lost another member of our class that helped to make Ahoskie a special place to grow up. I send sincere condolences to the Rose family.

I knew Jeff during the Chowan years and some years afterward while he was on the pavers at Rose Bros. A group of us use to hang out and have some good times and fun, even during some of coaching days at old MHS. RIP Jeff, all of us from that era will miss you. Condolences and prayers to all the Rose family members. (Harry in Peacham VT)
