Jewel Pauline Daughtry Tolson of Woodland, NC passed away peacefully on September 24, 2018, at the Fountains of the Albemarle in Tarboro NC at the wonderful age of 108.

She was born on July 4, 1910 in Menola, NC to the late Mary Jane Womble Daughtry and Osa Emory Daughtry. Jewel graduated from Woodland Olney School and the Sarah Leigh Hospital School of Nursing in Norfolk, Virginia. She was married to the late Paul Cummings Tolson and traveled extensively with him during their marriage. She enjoyed a 30-year career as a nurse to the residents of Northampton County. One of her happiest accomplishments was receiving a number of ribbons for her handmade Oriental rugs, including “Best of Show” at the North Carolina State Fair. She was a member of Woodland Baptist Church for over 90 years. In her later years, she managed rental property, did extensive gardening and cooking (Oh, those home-grown butter beans were something!) and mowed the lawn until her retirement at the age of 103.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation to The Fountains of the Albemarle for all their love and support during her five years as a resident there.

She is survived by her daughters, Judy Tolson Lassiter and her husband James Elliott Lassiter of Wendell, NC; June Tolson Chappell of Holly Springs NC; and her son Charles Kenneth Tolson and his wife Jenny Miller Tolson of Charlotte, NC. Grandchildren are Jim Lassiter and his wife Leslie, Mike Lassiter and his wife Lisa, and Stephanie Wilson and her husband Tom, Christopher Chappell and his wife Marilyn, Valerie Medlin and her husband Bren, Kim Chappell and Melissa Chappell. Great grandchildren are Ben, Andrew, Erin, Michael, Jonathan, Ross, Blake, Ellie, Skylar, Troy, Nick, Evie, Sheppard, and Kate.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Paul Tolson, son Paul Tolson Jr., and sister Ruth Hassey.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-1:45 PM on Saturday, September 29 at Woodland Baptist Church, 116 West Main Street Woodland, NC, 27897. Funeral Services will be held beginning at 2:00 PM. Burial will be at the Woodland Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made directly to Woodland Baptist Church, 116 West Main Street, Woodland, NC, 27897 or online by clicking here.

Ken – I am sorry for your loss. What an amazing life she probably witnessed in her more than 100 years. I’m sure she saw change that she never imagined and sounds as though she lived her life to the fullest. You were very blessed to have your mother for so long, but it doesn’t make the loss any easier. Prayers for you and your family in the coming days.

I cannot put into words what you must be feeling… losing a mother is like losing the only person who always understood even the things you never said out aloud. Life will never be the same again, but it’ll teach you to stand strong even during the toughest storms.
