Jordan Wilmer “Bill” Johnson, 86, died Monday, June 16, 2008.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2008 at Sycamore Shores, off Highway 561, in Halifax. The Reverend Craig Perry will be presiding.

Bill was a farmer and a Halfiax County Forest Ranger with the NC Forest Service until his retirement. He also wrote weekly columns for the Scotland Neck Commonwealth and the Enfield Progress newspapers. His books, The Rambling Ranger of the Roanoke and The Rambling Ex-Ranger of the Roanoke, were collections of his newspaper articles. He also ran Halifax County Guide Service with his son, Billy, for many years. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Savage Johnson; and his son, Carl Thomas Johnson.

He is survived by his daughter, Marie J. Bearden and friend Link Nixon of Scotland Neck; son, William Lee “Billy” Johnson and wife Jenks of Enfield; daughter-in-law, Sherry Johnson of Garner; brothers, Jerry Johnson and wife Peggy of Halifax, Dan Johnson and wife Diane of West Jefferson, and John Johnson and wife Joan of Siler City; four grandchildren, Beth Shepard and husband Micah, Thomas Bearden and wife Jenny, Lindy Allen and husband Ryan, and Heather Johnson; and three great-grandchildren, Katelyn Shepard, Cody Shepard, and Reagan Johnson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Community Hospital Residents Activity Fund, c/o Margaret Overman, P.O. Box 405, Scotland Neck, NC 27874 or to the National Wild Turkey Federation, P.O. Box 530, Edgefield, SC 29824.

Arrangements are being handled by Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
