Joseph Larry Butler, age 84, of Hampton, VA, passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. “Joe,” as he preferred to be called, was born in Scotland Neck, NC on November 29, 1938. He graduated from Scotland Neck High School and moved to Newport News to work for Newport News Shipbuilding. He retired after 40 years.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Ruffin and Rosebel (Basden) Butler; his brother, David Butler; and his sister, Jane Branch.

Left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 60 years, Alice W. Butler; his daughters, Angie (Steve) Farmer, and Jodi (Eric) Funkhouser; his grandchildren, James (Alisha) Funkhouser, Steven (Casey) Farmer, Ellen (Alex) Owens, and Chad Funkhouser; his great-grandchildren, Kylee Harrison, Cora Funkhouser, Lilly Funkhouser, Ashby Owens, and Basden Owens; his brother-in-law, Kenny Branch; as well as many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Homes – Riverside Chapel in Newport News, VA. Interment will follow in Joe’s hometown of Scotland Neck, NC on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery.
