AHOSKIE, NC – Katherine Futrell Allen, age 84, of Forest Drive, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at the Vidant North Hospital of Roanoke Rapids, NC surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Allen was born on October 19, 1936 to Franklin Norfleet Futrell and Vera Martin Futrell in Northampton County, NC. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband – legendary Coach Edison Daryl Allen, Sr.

A graduate of Chowan College and Campbell College, Katherine was a remarkable elementary school teacher for 28 years. A gifted artist, Katherine painted, photographed, and sketched. She also wrote and illustrated two children’s books. Her art is appreciated in many homes and can be seen as murals at Vidant Roanoke- Chowan Hospital and First Baptist Church of Ahoskie. She treasured her family and the special relationships she had with each of them. Katherine also had other passions and interests such as cooking and gardening. She was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie. As a member of the church family, she sang in the choirs and taught childrens’ Sunday School. She also held roles in Gallery Theatre productions and served as a volunteer at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Katherine and her husband, Daryl, were avid travelers with family, church and close friends. Katherine was a true inspiration who touched many lives, was well loved, and will be very deeply missed.

Her story and light live through her family members: brother, Melvin King Futrell of Conway; daughter, Donna Lynn Allen of Raleigh, son, Edison Daryl Allen, Jr. and wife Catherine Soomsawasdi Allen of Ahoskie, daughter, Kathy Ann Allen of Georgetown, TX; grandson, John Daryl Pescatore of Austin, TX, grandson, Edison Daryl Allen, III of South Mills, NC, granddaughter, Kristina Marie Pescatore of Bend, OR, granddaughter, Catherine Dare Allen Harp and husband Captain Brandon Louis Harp of Watertown, NY, granddaughter, Lauren Allie Taylor Jordan and husband James Shelton Jordan of Raleigh, grandson, Eric Carmine Pescatore of Vail, CO; four great-grandsons, Connor Shelton Jordan, Camden Taylor Jordan, Luke Wyatt Harp, and Cade William Harp.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Friday, July 2, 2021, 11:30 am at the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Dr. Paul R. Gilliam, III officiating. A private family burial will be held prior to the service at the Martin Family Cemetery in Conway, NC.

I did my student teaching under Mrs. Allen in the spring of 1992. She was a wonderful mentor and great teacher. Thoughts and prayers to all her family and friends.
