MERRY HILL, NC – Katy Ann Peele Rawls, age 83, formerly of Aulander, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at the Windsor House in Windsor, NC.

Mrs. Katy was born on October 31, 1935 to the late Alton William and Fannie Mae Jenkins Peele in Aulander, NC. She was one of six children born to this union. Katy married the love of her life on June 27, 1959 and has referred to him as her Buddy for 60 years. She had a strong bond with her five siblings as they cherished time they spent together. Katy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a schoolteacher for many years, beginning her career teaching 3rd grade in Windsor, NC and finishing at Ridgecroft School in Ahoskie with Kindergarten. She loved all her students dearly as they were known as her little chick a d’s. Katy never met a stranger and loved everyone. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, watching hummingbirds, and being at the river. Katy was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all that knew her.

Left to cherish Katy’s memory is her loving husband, Stanley, her son, Chris Rawls of Aulander; her daughter, Candi Rawls High and husband Vernon of Greenville, NC; two brothers, Joseph Arnold Peele and Partner, Harold Ramsey of Greenville, and Bubba Peele and wife Carolyn of Aulander; three sisters, Jean Peele Rhea of Ahoskie, Sue Peele Lassiter and husband Daniel of Aulander, and Sandra Peele and friend, Fred Drew of Aulander; two granddaughters, Madison Rawls and Alayna High; grandson, Asher High; along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 24, 2019, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, 2:00 pm at the Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Charles Thompson officiating. There will be a private burial at Aulander Cemetery.

I remember the first Time I met Ms. Katy, it was as if we had known each other for as long as I had been born. She was always so welcoming and loving. We would have talks and with every word she said it was with such excitement, love, delight and wonder. It would just draw you in and before you knew it you were experiencing the same with each word she spoke. She could make you feel as if you were the most important person in the world. I feel my life has been enriched with the time I was lucky enough to spend with her. I am grateful and very fortunate to have known Ms. Katy and proud that she will always be a part of my family.

She was my second grade teacher who had a great influence on my life, she always reminded me of Miss Crump on the Andy Griffin show! Things that she taught me I still remember to this day

We loved Mrs. Katy & Stan too. She loved to talk to us. She often talked of her children and grandchildren. She also loved her brothers and sisters. She made us feel good just by being around her. She was truly a joyful, sweet lady that will be deeply missed.
