AHOSKIE, N.C. – Lawrence Wood Myers went to his heavenly home on October 29, 2018 after a long-extended illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie Wayne Myers Sr. and Lena Myers Myers and by his two older siblings, Archie Wayne Myers Jr. and Janice Myers Wynns. His is survived by the love of his life, Elaine Early Myers of the home and daughter, Paige Myers of Fuquay Varina, N.C. Lawrence Wood and Elaine recently celebrated 55 years of marriage with family and friends.
Lawrence Wood was a native of Bertie County, a graduate of Mars Hill High School, Chowan University and attended Barton College until he entered the United States Army and later the North Carolina National Guard Reserves. He joined his father and brother in the family business, A.W. Myers Building Supply in Ahoskie, in the 1960’s. Lawrence Wood always had an entrepreneur spirit as he and his wife founded Pinewood Manor Rest Home and grew it into a 100-bed long-term care facility. Later, he established a One Hour Photo business in Ahoskie and Roanoke-Chowan Travel, a charter travel service.
A dedicated Christian, he was active in Earlys Baptist Church since his marriage and served in many leadership capacities namely as a teacher of the Adult Sunday School Class for years and as a member of the choir. He also served many times as deacon and deacon chair. He had a great interest in Chowan University and in 2015, he helped establish a new facility on campus for the Development Department, the Early-Myers House. He served on Chowan’s Alumni Board and on the Board of Visitors for many years. Lawrence Wood loved watching all sports, but his favorite was ACC basketball. He also enjoyed special family times at Nags Head, on the Chowan river and at the Brinkley Red House.
Visitation will be held at Garretts-Sykes Funeral Home, 205 NC 42 W, Ahoskie on Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 7 until 8:30pm and friends are welcomed to the home at 512 S. Curtis Street, Ahoskie at other times. A private burial will be in the Ahoskie Cemetery on Friday, November 2, 2018 with a public memorial service to follow at Garretts-Sykes Funeral Home at 11:00am. A reception will follow the service at Catherine’s Restaurant, 706 S. Catherine Creek Road, Ahoskie.
Officiating the services will be the Reverend Ronald W. McSwain, Former Pastor of Earlys Baptist Church and the Reverend Doctor Jesse J. Croom, Interim Pastor of Earlys Baptist Church.
