Leona Williams Staton, 94, died Wednesday, February 9, 2011.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck.
Leona was born on January 3, 1917, near Cedar Bluff, MS. She graduated from Shaw High School in Shaw, MS in 1935, from Morehead Junior College in 1937, and from Mississippi State College for Women in 1939. Leona taught school for 12 years in Mississippi and for 23 years in North Carolina. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck, where she taught Sunday School for many years. Leona was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers society, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lynwood Staton; her parents, Pleasee and Velma Williams; and her brother, H.P. Williams, Jr.
Leona is survived by her daughter, Carolyn S. Philips and husband Parker of Battleboro; her sister, Louise Williams Hanbury of Ridgeland, MS; and her grandson, James Patrick Philips of Battleboro.
The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.
