Mrs. Mabel Joyner Slaughter, age 85, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2013, at Rich Square Health Care Center. Mrs. Slaughter was born March 25, 1928 to the late Jennie Mary Garris and Cecil Irving Joyner. She was a graduate of Murfreesboro High School. Mrs. Slaughter was a lifetime active member of Meherrin Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school secretary and was a member of the church choir. She was employed as bookkeeper for Murfreesboro Western Auto and in the business office at Chowan University from 1969 until retirement. Mrs. Slaughter volunteered with Murfreesboro Historical Society, Jefcoat Museum and Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital Auxiliary. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Earnest Slaughter, step-children, Kenneth Slaughter and Kay Warner.

Surviving Mrs. Slaughter are two sisters, Marjorie Scott and her husband Bob of Kingsport, TN. and Judith Sadler of Kingport, TN, three brothers; James E. Joyner of Murfreesboro, Robert E. Joyner and his wife Judy of Murfreesboro and Cecil A. Joyner and his wife Ann of Ahoskie, one nephew and several nieces

The family will receive friends Saturday evening, November 9, 2013 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service in Ahoskie from 7-8:30 PM. The funeral service for Mrs. Slaughter will be Sunday, November 10, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Meherrin Baptist Church in Murfreesboro, NC with Rev. Joshua Parsons officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

To all the Joyner family,

My condolences to you all on the loss of Mabel Lois…who always was very nice to me growing up and later on as an adult when I was back in town and church.
