CONWAY, NC – Madie Alice Sumner Draper, age 93, of Hwy 158, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2022 at her home.
Mrs. Draper was born on July 12, 1928 to Wiley and Flora Butler Sumner in Northampton County. She graduated from Conway High School and attended Louisburg College. She worked for Carolina Telephone Co. as a desk clerk and switchboard operator. Later she worked for several florist shops as a designer. In 1948 she married her school sweetheart Joseph Hiram Draper, Jr., they had 46 loving years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph Hiram Draper, Jr., a son-in-law Ron Topping and a great grandson Joseph Warren Early.
Madie is survived by two daughters, Susan Draper Coley (Bob) of Littleton, NC, and Bonnie Alyson Townsend of Wilmington, NC; a sister, Bren S. Stifft of Fort Lauderdale, FL; two granddaughters, Jo Marie Barwick (A.G.) of Wendell, NC, and Stephanie Sloan (Brian) of Selma, NC; a grandson, Derrick Callis of Wilmington, NC; four great-grandchildren, Alyson Barwick of Wendell, NC, Hunter Early of Knightdale, NC, Jordan Barwick of Wendell, NC, and Gavin Sloan of Selma NC; her caregiver, Selma Johnson, and several close cousins.
Madie Alice was a member of Conway Baptist Church and lifetime member of W.M.U. She taught Sunday school classes, study courses, was a member of the choir, served as president of W.M.U., and spoke at several churches in the West Chowan Baptist Association.
A celebration of life graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at 2:00 pm at the Conway Cemetery, Conway, NC, with Rev. Willie McLawhorn, officiating.

The Campbell kids have many fond memories of playing down her dirt path, with Jo Marie and Stephanie, and that pool table. Most of all, she and Mama loves their doll collection.
