Margaret Elizabeth Hamlin Johnson

June 24, 2010

Margaret Elizabeth Hamlin Johnson, 98, passed away in her home of natural causes in the presence of her Lord in the morning of June 24, 2010.

She was born November 5, 1911 in Wakefield, VA to her parents Charles Thomas (Tom) Hamlin, Sr. and Margaret Anne Savedge Hamlin. She was the second child of two brothers and two sisters, the late Mary Virginia Hamlin, the late Charles Thomas Hamlin, Jr. and is survived by Richard William (Bill) Hamlin of Astor, Florida and Rosalie Anne Hamlin Parrot of Midland, Texas.

While attending Duke University for nursing, she met the late F. Roy Johnson Sr. who she married in 1933. After living in Surry, VA a few years, they moved with the two oldest children, Mary Anne and Frank to Murfreesboro where Roy bought a newspaper business. In Murfreesboro, they had their third child, Charles where Margaret lived out her years. Roy sold the newspaper business and started writing and printing books in 1960. Margaret enjoyed writing and helped proof many of her husband’s books until his death in 1988. She was a devoted member of the Murfreesboro United Methodist Church, and an active member of the Murfreesboro Women’s Club. She also continued to support Roy’s work after his death through the North Carolina Folk Lore Association and Murfreesboro Historical Association.

She is survived by children Mary Anne Johnson of Goldsboro, NC, Charles William Johnson of Murfreesboro, NC, and her daughter- in-law, Mabel Johnson, the widow of the late Frank R. Johnson Jr. of Wakefield, VA. She is survived by grandchildren F. Mark Johnson of Wakefield, VA, Neil H. Johnson and wife Crystal of Raleigh, NC and Roy W. Johnson of Raleigh, NC. Margaret enjoyed her two great grand children, Benjamin and Miranda.

Special thank-you to the nursing staff that provided ‘Miss Margaret’ with home care so that she could live out her days at home where she wanted to be.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Murfreesboro United Methodist Church, 313 West High Street, with the Rev. Arthur Warren officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the church.

We were saddened to hear of Aunt Sister’s passing, but know that she is in a better place and at peace. Margaret Johnson was my aunt. My mother, her sister Anne, doesn’t use the internet anymore, but would like to all the family to know that if she were physically able to travel she would be there. She sends her thoughts and prayers.
