AHOSKIE, NC ‑ Mary Liverman Harrell, age 83, of Ahoskie, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2016, at the Hampton Woods Health & Rehabilitation of Jackson, NC.

Mrs. Harrell was born in Northampton County on May 5, 1932, a daughter of the late Ashley Wynn and Elizabeth Liverman Liverman.   Mary was a faithful, active member of Union Baptist Church for over 60 years.  She was retired as a Unit Secretary for Roanoke Chowan Hospital after many years of service.  Mary enjoyed traveling on bus trips and shopping.  She was a caregiver at heart, as was evident by her many years of caring for her “Big Brother” James, and her total delight in helping her adored granddaughter with her twin great grandsons.

Besides her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband, Johnnie Gurley Harrell, Jr.; her brothers, James and Milton Liverman; and her granddaughter, Kayla Gunnells.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Nancy H. Gunnells of Conway, NC; her son, John R. Harrell of Raleigh, NC; her granddaughter, Kelly Peele Vann and husband, Heath of Conway, NC; and her twin great grandsons, Dawson and DaltonVann.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 12, 2016, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Garrett‑Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC and other times at the home of her granddaughter, Kelly Vann.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2016, at 2:00 pm at the Union Baptist Church, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Don Polvadore, and Rev. Greg Powell officiating.  Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to Union Baptist Church, 431 Boone Farm Road, Ahoskie, NC, 27910; or to The American Cancer Society, Hertford‑Gates Relay for Life, 930B Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC, 27834.

Mrs. Mary was joy to work with when I was employed at RCH on the second floor as a Unit Secretary. I enjoyed her stories about her and her beloved granddaughter.

I remember the many happy hours that I spent in the Harrell household. Mary Elizabeth was fun loving, happy, and loving. She was always ready to help others and she was a devoted wife and mother. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her.
