AHOSKIE, NC – Mavis Harrison Askew, 87, of Hertford County, North Carolina, passed away on December 13, 2023. She was born on June 9, 1936, in Bertie County, North Carolina to the late Denny Harrison and Nellie Lassiter Harrison.

Mavis dedicated her life to being a loving homemaker, always ensuring that her family was well cared for. Her interests included gardening and tending to yard flowers, which brought her great joy. Mavis also enjoyed playing bingo, savoring a refreshing Coca-Cola, and chewing gum. She loved her dogs deeply, Wendy, and Missy. May Mavis rest in eternal peace, and may her memories bring solace to all those who knew and loved her.

Mavis is preceded in death by her son, Rex Jones, as well as her siblings Dorothy Blanton, Odell Jenkins, Annie Barmer, Sadie Mulder, Russell, Earl, and Elton Harrison, all of whom she cherished deeply. Alongside her parents, their memory will forever be etched in her heart.

She leaves behind a legacy that will be carried on by her beloved daughter, Sheila Cotton, and her husband Walter, of Jacksonville, NC, along with their children Cierra, Natalie, and Jessica Cotton. Additionally, Mavis is survived by her grandsons, Travis and Brian Jones, sister Betty Davis, special friend, Evelyn Byrd; numerous nieces and nephews, extended family members, and the caring staff at Ahoskie House.

A visitation will be held on Monday, December 18, 2023, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service – Ahoskie Chapel, located in Ahoskie, NC. A celebration of life funeral service celebrating Mavis’ life will follow the visitation, beginning at 12:00 pm. Chaplain Rick Lowery will officiate the service and provide words of comfort and reflection.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you and great appreciation for the love and compassionate care shown to Mavis during her illness by the staff at the Ahoskie House and Gentiva Hospice.

Ms. Askew was my grandmother’s roommate for many years. I enjoyed visiting with her. Our family was so sad to hear of her passing. If Ms. Sheila or Cierra happen to see this message, please have Cierra check her work messages. I sent her one. Continued prayers.
