Conway, NC – Shirley Wrenn Woodard, age 93, of Garriss Street passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Pine Forest Rest Home in Potecasi NC.

Mr. Woodard was born on June 17, 1929 to Aubrey Otis Woodard, Sr. and Beatrice Boothe Woodard in Severn, North Carolina. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Shirley was the Owner/Operator of Small Motors and Service Company in Murfreesboro for 50 plus years. He was a lifelong member of Conway Baptist Church, a Charter member of Conway Volunteer Fire Department, a Mason/Shriner and a Veteran of the Naval Reserves. Shirley was married to Essie for 70 years. Shirley and Essie raised six children and inspired many others. He enjoyed his yard, gardening, and working in his shop making chairs and stools. He was self-taught in caning chair bottoms and stools and proudly gave them to family and friends. Shirley was loved by his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey Otis, Sr. and Beatrice Woodard, his wife, Essie Braswell Woodard, his great-grandson, Hinton McGee Meyer and brothers Aubrey Otis, Jr, Kenneth, Linwood, and John Woodard.

Shirley is survived by four daughters, Kathy Sumner (Leo) of Windsor, Becky Holloman (Jim) of Tulsa, Ok, Debbie McGee (George) of Severn, and Cindy Coombs (Dave) of Conway; two sons, Stewart Woodard (Sebrina) of Conway, and Melvin Woodard (Pam) of Pendleton; thirteen grandchildren, William Edwards, III (Bri-Anna), Kristen E. Proulx (David), Jon Holloman (Lauren), Thomas Holloman (Victoria), Daniel Holloman, Melissa M. Meyer (Kevin), Mark McGee (Danielle), Michael Woodard (Malinda), Joni W. Gray (Steven), Landon Woodard, Wrenn Woodard (Megan), Kirstie Snodderly (Bret), Taylor Coombs; five step-grandchildren, Timmie Turner (Tabitha), Travis Turner (Lauren), Trent Turner, Jesse Sumner and Ashton Weller (Brian); seventeen great-grandchildren, Cloey and Colton Edwards, Nathan and Evan Proulx, Emily and Nathan Holloman, James Anthony Holloman, Elsbeth and Lane Meyer, Avery and Anna McGee, Linley and Michael S. Woodard, Ian, Eli, and Dylan Gray, Emmett Woodard and three on the way; three step great-grandchildren, Riley Turner, Carly and Claire Turner; sister, Onita Sexton; brother, Lefty Woodard and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 5, 2023, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Garrett- Sykes Memorial Chapel, Murfreesboro, NC, and other times at Mr. Woodard’s home.

A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, March 6, 2023, at 11:00 am at Conway Baptist Church with Reverend Willie McLawhorn officiating. Burial will follow in Conway Cemetery.

Henry and I send our deepest sympathies to the Woodard family. Shirley was a great man and you can’t think of Murfreesboro without remembering him. Enjoyed our conversations. Heart felt condolences to the family.
