MURFREESBORO, NC – Mrs. Ola Barnes Garris, age 91, peacefully passed away on March 6, 2024 at ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital, following a life well-lived and filled with love. She was born on November 12, 1932, in Northampton County, North Carolina, to the late Willie and Holly Bridgers Barnes.

Ola dedicated many years as a secretary with Georgia Pacific, displaying diligence and grace in her work. Outside of her professional endeavors, she found joy in simple pleasures, such as playing cards, solving word search puzzles, and cherishing visits from her great grandchildren. She especially cherished trips for chocolate milkshakes with her daughter Joan and the soul-stirring melodies when the Mennonites sang at Pine Forest. Ola was a devoted member of Meherrin Baptist Church. She will be fondly remembered for her warm smile and kind heart. Ola will forever be remembered for her gentle spirit and unwavering love for her family. May she rest in eternal peace.

She is survived by her loving children, James Ellis Garris (Del) of Hertford, and Pamela Joan Grizzard (Jody) of Murfreesboro; four grandchildren, Jason Grizzard (Hadassah) of Zebulon, Justin Grizzard of Kill Devil Hills, Jill Grizzard of Chesterfield, VA, and Jonathan Garris of Murfreesboro; great-grandchildren, Annabella and Bryce Grizzard; brother, Tommy Barnes; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Preceding Ola in eternal rest are her beloved husband, James Bailey Garris, Jr., her father Willie Barnes, mother Holly Bridgers Barnes, brother W. R. Barnes, and sister Blannie Barnes Outland.

A visitation in memory of Mrs. Ola Barnes Garris will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Meherrin Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Murfreesboro, NC. The graveside service will follow at 2:00 pm at Meherrin Baptist Church Cemetery, officiated by Rev. John Porter.

Joan, Ellis and family: I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your mom, Miss Ola Mae. She was such a sweet lady. I am so glad that I visited her at Pine Forest when I went to Rich Square to visit my mom one weekend. Your mom was so gracious and she actually remembered me!
Joan, I was saddened when I heard about your accident this week. I pray that you will heal quickly, both physically and mentally. Your mom would want you to take care of yourself.
May the special memories you shared with your mom comfort you and give you peace! Love you!

The residents at Pine Forest were saddened to hear about the passing of Ms. Ola. She will truly be missed by her friends and family that she gained when moving in almost 7 years ago. We will miss playing Bingo with her, joking with her about Skip-Bo, going out to eat with her, and hearing her talk to all the visitors in the halls. We are praying for the family during this time and sending our love!

Ellis and family I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Ms. Ola Mae. I had the privilege of working with her when she first moved in at Pine Forest. We had a chance to have some good conversations, some laughs, and talking about family. I had been wanting to go back and visit with her again, but couldn’t get there to see her. Prayers go out for the family at this time. If there is anything I can do to help yall please let me know!
