ENFIELD, NC — Onita Woodard Sexton, 96, went home to be with the Lord on March 31, 2023. Mrs. Sexton was born October 3, 1926 in Branchville, VA. Raised in Conway, NC along with her six brothers, they lived during a time of war and the Great Depression. After attending Pan-American Business School in Richmond, VA, Mrs. Sexton returned to Conway, NC until marrying her husband Thomas Edison Sexton. The two of them lived in Enfield, NC, where they started their family. Mrs. Sexton was a devoted daughter, sister, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. During the 29 years following her husband’s death she continued to be faithful to her church, family, friends, and community. She stayed busy preparing meals, being involved in her grandchildren’s activities, growing flowers, studying the Bible, praying for others, and enjoying a sweet treat. She leaves behind a great legacy of faith in the Lord Jesus, devotion, selflessness, and love. Her warm, loving smile and presence will be missed by all that knew her.

Mrs. Sexton is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Edison Sexton, mother, Beatrice Woodard, her father, Aubrey Otis Woodard, Sr. and five brothers, Aubrey Otis, Kenneth, Linwood, Shirley and John Woodard.

She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Sexton York and her husband Randy of Raleigh; her son, Tom “Tommy” Sexton and his wife Pamela of Mt. Pleasant, SC; her brother, Gilbert “Lefty” Woodard of Reidsville; granddaughter, Lindsay Kovacs and her husband Pete of Wake Forest; three grandsons, Colby York of Raleigh, Thomas Sexton, III of Columbia, SC, and Charlie Sexton of Mt. Pleasant; and great-granddaughter, Atari Elson of Wake Forest.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Enfield Baptist Church on Friday, April 7, 2023, at 11:00AM. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 am to 10:45 am. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. Rev. David Brantley will be officiating the service.

Mrs. Sexton was such a sweet lady! Her daughter, Valerie, lives beside me. When she was visiting, she and I liked to walk around the yards and look at our flowers. We’d talk and I enjoyed her company ? She was always a pleasure to talk to. I’ll miss her for sure ❤️

I have enjoyed every moment I spent with Mrs. Sexton. Whether it was seeing each other at a retail store, pharmacy parking lot or the time she worked at Enfield Oil Company/Eastern Petroleum, we would always chat about the local events. Mrs. Sexton was a wonderful lady and a blessing to many. She will be greatly missed by me and my family. Keeping the Sexton family in our prayers.
With deepest sympathy,
Ernie, Carolyn and Dean Vick
