Owen was born on February 10, 1927. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1944-1946. Owen retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 35 years of service and was an entrepreneur in several businesses. Blessed with a calling to mentor to young boys and young men, Owen’s involvement with them included teaching Sunday school, leading Explorer Scouts and Royal Ambassadors, and coaching and supporting youth sports. He was generous to the less fortunate, a founding member of Scotfield Country Club, and served on the Halifax County Planning Board. Owen was deeply devoted to his grandchildren and great-grandchild. He was always eager to be with them, to support them in their school and life activities, to teach them to fish, build, create, and care about others. His love for them grew every day.

Owen is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan Womack Dudley; three sons, Owen F. Dudley, Jr. and wife Sue of Naples, FL, John E. Dudley and wife Janet of Scotland Neck, and George H. Dudley and wife Kathy of Wake Forest; four grandchildren, Michele D. Ward of Morehead City, Brooks Dudley of Charlotte, Howard Dudley of Richmond, VA, and David “Rob” Dudley of Scotland Neck; and one great-granddaughter, Mary-Stuart Ward of Morehead City.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the home of John and Janet Dudley, 3173 Bakers School Road, Scotland Neck, NC.
