Patsy Potter Harrell, age 92, of Oak City, NC, passed away on Monday, May 15, 2023, at Edgecombe Health and Rehabilitation Center in Tarboro.

Patsy was born on December 26, 1930, to Harrison and Mollie Potter in Packard, Kentucky. As the the eighth of nine children, Patsy always had a determined spirit. At eighteen, Patsy decided to move to North Carolina and live with her brother, Harry. She informed her brother she was coming via mail but to Harry’s surprise, Patsy arrived before the post did. Once she settled in North Carolina, her best friend, Jane Curtis, arranged a blind date for her. Unknown to Patsy, that blind date would eventually lead to a fifty-eight-year marriage. Patsy married Spencer Harrell on April 5, 1959, and the two soon welcomed a son and a daughter. While Patsy earned her associate degree and held several jobs over the years, her most cherished positions were that of Mother and later Grandmother. Patsy was strong in her Christian faith. When Patsy wasn’t taking care of her family, she could be found at Oak City Baptist Church singing in the choir, participating in bible study, or preparing for her favorite occasion: a church homecoming. Patsy was famous for her cooking, especially her Carmel cakes. She was also revered by her grandchildren for her fried chicken and rice krispie treats. She enjoyed shopping for her family, never missing the opportunity to take advantage of a good sale and loved to socialize and talk on the phone to her family and friends. She will forever be remembered for making her family laugh, and never failing to join in herself.

Patsy was preceded in death by her father, Harrison Potter; her mother, Mollie Wilder Potter; and her husband, Spencer Louis Harrell, Sr.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Ann Townsley and husband Paul of Chesapeake, VA; her son, Spence Harrell, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Raleigh; her sister, Jo Creech of Corbin, KY; her grandson, Christian Harrell of Raleigh; and her granddaughters, Brittan Harrell of Washington, DC, Sarah Townsley and husband William Miller of San Diego, CA, and Kathryn Townsley of Arlington, VA.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at the Oak City Baptist Church in Oak City. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. Delmus Ayers officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak City Cemetery.
