Pattie Lawrence Phillips Whitehead, age 87, of Hobgood, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on December 15, 2020.
She was born on January 16, 1933 to Fred Hugh and Susan Dickens Phillips at their home in Roseneath Township of Halifax County. Pattie and her husband Roy C. “R.C” Whitehead, Sr. enjoyed almost seventy years of marriage. They both came from hard-working farming families and rarely took vacations, but they did make one momentous journey to the Holy Land. After the children left home and they had more time for themselves, they surprised everyone by taking up square-dancing. Pattie worked hard throughout her life and spent many years as a bookkeeper. She helped remodel three houses including her “home place” on Phillips Road. She loved collecting antiques and working in her garden, rooting her own azaleas. She sold organic strawberries before it became the fashion. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was loved dearly and will be missed by her family and friends.
Pattie was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Theora Phillips Stroud and Margaret Phillips Harrell, and two brothers, Marvin Hugh Phillips and George Thomas Phillips.
Pattie is survived by her husband, R.C.; a son, Roy Whitehead, Jr. of Scotland Neck and Anne P. Whitehead of Oxford; four daughters, Patricia W. Thompson and husband Michael of Apex, Rebecca W. Wade of Cary, Cindy W. Hinton and husband Billy of Zebulon, and Angela Whitehead and Paige Acree of Wilmington; a sister, Edna Phillips Sorie of Scotland Neck; a sister-in-law, Daphne B. Phillips of Garner; six granddaughters, Kelly W. Woodlief and husband Tony of Oxford, Jamie W. Weathers and husband Matt of Clayton, Lisa Lepage of Denver, CO, Karen Lepage of Seattle, WA, Sammi Kay Pollard and Samantha Pollard of Greenville, SC; four grandsons, Trey Whitehead and wife Heather of Franklinton, Guy Dodson of Wilmington, Kyle Dodson and Jasmine Moschella of Holly Springs, and Samuel Pollard of Greenville, SC; four great-granddaughters, Kadence and Hailey Woodlief, Ava Whitehead, and MacKenzie Dodson-Moschella; four great-grandsons, Zach Woodlief, Maddox and Braxton Weathers, and Cade Whitehead.
Due to concerns regarding COVID-19, the family will have a private funeral service with Rev. Don Glendenning officiating.
Flowers are welcome but memorial contributions may be made directly to PruittHealth Hospice, 301 S. Church St., Suite 135, Rocky Mount, NC 27804, or online by clicking here.
