ROXOBEL – Preston Carroll Minton, beloved father, grandfather, and member of his community, passed away on Friday, July 21, 2023. Preston was born on March 3, 1929, in Roxobel, NC, making him 94 years old at the time of his passing.

Throughout his life, Carroll had a diverse work experience that spanned different fields. He proudly served in the US Army as a cook and ran an officers mess in Middletown, NY. Additionally, he owned and operated Minton’s Plumbing for many years until recently, demonstrating his commitment and dedication to his work.

Carroll had a deep affection for his hometown of Roxobel and fondly referred to it as “The Garden Spot of the World,” often likening it to Eden. He served as the official tour guide of Roxobel and was a loving advocate for the town. Carroll was also a devoted family man, particularly cherishing his wife, Pattie, and took immense pleasure in spending time with his loved ones.

Known for his strong sense of community service, Carroll consistently demonstrated his care and concern for others. He looked after the older ladies in the community, providing them with much-needed support and assistance. Additionally, he played the role of Santa Claus in town, secretly distributing candy in someone else’s car, bringing joy to many without seeking recognition.

Carroll had a great sense of humor and loved sharing jokes, with his daughter-in-law, Shirl, being his main target. He was described as a loving person who always went out of his way to help those around him. This compassionate nature extended to his involvement in various community organizations and activities. Carroll served as a member of the Roxobel Town Board and was a commissioner of Roxobel for an impressive 36 years. He was also a dedicated member of the Roxobel Fire Department for 65 years and a lifetime member of Sandy Run Baptist Church.

Carroll was preceded in death by his father, Preston Jenkins Minton; his mother, Myrtle Mae Minton; his loving wife of 66 years Pattie Whitehead Minton. and his brothers, Joseph Minton, Gene Minton, Wilson Minton, and Rubert Earl Minton.

Carroll is survived by his two daughters, Kathryn Bazemore and husband Ken of Archer Lodge, NC and Myrna Goldberg and husband Jack of Roanoke Rapids; as well as his son, Stephen Carroll Minton and wife Shirl of Roxobel. He is also survived by three grandsons, Aaron Bazemore of Little River, SC, Ben Goldberg and Sara of Charlottesville, VA, and Craig Minton of Williamston; along with three granddaughters, Carroll Pate and husband Don of Selma, Emily Goldberg of Raleigh, and Mallory Harris and husband Trent of Fuquay Varina. Carroll will also be dearly missed by his great-grandchildren, Colby, Addison, and Emerson Bazemore, Aidan and Olivia Pate, Preston Jean and Bodie Harris; as well as his sister-in-law, Virginia Minton of Ahoskie.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 23, 2023 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service – Rich Square Chapel.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, 2023 at the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery, with Rev. Doug Spivey and Rev. David Walther officiating.  Military Honors and the Fireman’s Last Call will be awarded Mr. Minton.

Always a large personality! I will miss his laugh. I am so sorry for your loss Kathy, Myrna and Steve. He was such a good man. I see a Minton celebration in heaven with all the Minton boys. How lucky we all have been to have had these men as great fathers. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
