AHOSKIE, NC – Rachel Ann Blowe Young, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many, went to be with her Lord on April 20, 2024. Affectionately known to her family as “Mammy”, Rachel was born in Ahoskie on May 30, 1939. She was one of two daughters born to William Franklin Blowe and Mattie Lassiter Blowe.

Rachel graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1957. As a teenager, she worked at The Soda Shop in downtown Ahoskie, where she met the love of her life, Carroll Young. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in November 2023. As a young mother, Rachel was employed at the Alamac Factory in Ahoskie. She later assisted Carroll with various business ventures: Young’s Furniture, Young’s Supermarket, and the Little Liz Restaurant. She served as bookkeeper for Young Brothers Building Contractors and later Carroll Young Building Contractor and Rentals. She served as a volunteer on the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and with the Ahoskie Food Pantry.

She was a member of Early’s Baptist Church, where she loved attending church, taught children’s Sunday School, assisted with Vacation Bible School, and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU). She enjoyed making sweets and baking countless cakes for both church events and family gatherings.

Rachel’s happiest moments were spent with family. She loved having everyone gathered for meals, holidays, and special occasions. She and Carroll enjoyed traveling with friends and going on various bus trips. She also enjoyed watching television in the comfort of her home. Her favorite shows were soap operas, particularly the Young and the Restless and the Bold and the Beautiful, the Andy Griffith Show, and Lifetime and Hallmark movies.

Along with her parents, Rachel is predeceased by her sister, Geraldine Blowe Bryant.

Rachel is survived by her husband, Carroll, three daughters, Lisa Young Outlaw and husband Scott of Ahoskie, Becky Young Cale and husband Doug of Winterville, and Donna Young (Doughtie) Pittman of Manteo; four grandsons, Brian Outlaw and wife Victoria of Ahoskie, Blake Outlaw and wife Abbigail of Greenville, Jason Cale and wife Morgan of Fuquay Varina, and Brent Doughtie and wife Brittney of Manteo; two granddaughters, Kathryn Paige Outlaw of Ahoskie, and Lauren Cale of Grimesland; and seven great-grandchildren, Peyton and Waylon Outlaw, Avery, Emerson, and Harper Cale, Reagan, and Parker Doughtie.

The family wishes to express appreciation to the staff of ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Rich Square Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Gentiva Hospice for the loving care they provided her in her last weeks.

A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC with Rev Joshua Prosser and Rev. Dennis Bazemore officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 pm until 1:45 pm at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter Lisa and Scott Outlaw. Burial will follow the service at Stoney Creek Cemetery and everyone is invited to a reception at Early’s Baptist Church following the burial.

Lisa, Becky and family, I am saddened to learn of Mrs Rachel’s passing. Such a sweet lady and always had a smile ready for those she met. Prayers for all of you that God brings each of you the comfort needed to journey through this difficult and sad time. May sweet memories fill your heart and may your tears soon turn into smiles.

Words come mighty hard in times like these. I have known Rachel and Carroll and all 3 of the girls for many years. Lots of memories come to mind. Earlys Station will never be the same. Lots of prayers are going your way. To each and every child, grandchild and great grandchild, know that she loved you all. She was extra special and will be remembered forever and ever.
I love you all to the moon and back.

Prayers for all the family. I remember traveling with Rachel and Carroll on Ms Ellen’s trips and our many other encounters, at the bank. I know Carroll will be lost without his sidekick. Hugs
